"The Most Common Modes of Transportation in the Philippines"

They say that Philippines is a paradise, probably the greatest gift given to man. Comprising with over 7,000 islands, you will not run out of option in choosing beautiful and popular places and destination, may it be about nature, mountain hiking or beach hopping.

Of course, with diverse culture comes different ways of living, including the modes of transportation. Obviously, there are various ways of reaching one’s destination. But in the Philippines, one cannot just make any, it should have to be related to the Filipino culture and it should have to be affordable.

In this blog, I will share to you my top 3 most common modes of transportations in the Philippines. While others might not agree with all of these, note that this is just my own opinion. By the way, here are my most common modes of transportation in the Philippines.

1.The Jeepneys

Well according to Wikipedia,

Jeepneys or sometimes called simply jeeps or dyip in Filipino are the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines. They are known for their crowded seating and kitsch decorations, which have become a ubiquitous symbol of Philippine culture and art. A Sarao jeepney was exhibited at the Philippine pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair as a national image for the Filipinos. Source.

This medium of transportation is common on most big cities such as in the place where I lived, in Iligan City. The vehicle’s seats are designed to face each other which is perfect for chatting with people and to avoid boring travel.

Interesting Fact: This mode of transportation does not really require a fare or fee collector. Inside the vehicle, the passengers will just hand their money to other passengers which will then be handed to the driver simultaneously.

2. Tricycles

Motorized tricycles or simply tricycles are in fact a motorbike and sidecar, are an indigenous form of the auto rickshaw and are a common means of public transportation in the Philippines. These public utility vehicles either ply a set route or are for-hire, like taxis. According to the Boracay Budget Travel website, the motorized tricycle or tricycle is the most popular means of transport in small towns and cities, especially in the rural areas. Source

Tricycles are suitable in small places such as small municipalities and barangays for easy maneuvers. This type of vehicle could vary in styles from places to places. But the main idea of tricycle is by locally making a sidecar which will be affixed in any motorcycle.

Interesting Fact: This small vehicle can accommodate at least 5 passenger depending on the design including at least 1 passenger at the back of the driver. The other stuffs by passengers can be placed on the roof of the sidecar.

3. Busses

A bus is a road vehicle designed to carry many passengers. Buses can have a capacity as high as 300 passengers. Buses may be used for scheduled bus transport, scheduled coach transport, school transport, private hire, or tourism; promotional buses may be used for political campaigns and others are privately operated for a wide range of purposes, including rock and pop band tour vehicles. Of course just like other countries, the Philippine’s most common transportation for far destinations are the busses, except of course for those people with private vehicles. Others also used vans but most passengers prefer busses.

Not so Interesting Fact: In the Philippines, drivers of all busses are accompanied with fee collectors which is locally known as “conductor” or konduktor. This man is tasked to collect the fares of all the passengers inside the bus. He will also ask the destination of the passenger upon issuing ticket.
