The Magat Hydro Electric Power Plant is the largest among power plants in Luzon, which is one of the three main islands of the Philippines. It is a type of rock-fill dam with rated flow of 128 meter cubes over s per unit. The facility draws water from tge Magat River through the multi-porpuse Magat dam. It is owned by the company SN Aboitiz Power- Magat, Inc.
The Dam is useful for power generation and flood control but its major purpose is to irrigate around 85,000 hectares of agricultural lands in Cagayan Valley, mostly in Isabela Province. The power components of the facility were privatized. Equipped with four Francis units of 90 MW each, it can hold 360 megawatts.
The Magat Dam and its regulating facilities downstream are owned and maintained by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), a government Corporation. The power plant uses the same water needed for irrigation and uts use of water from the dam is dependent on NIA's irrigation diversion requirement.
Magat operates as a peaking plant. Ut generally runs only when there is a high demand, known as peak demand, for electricity. A portion of its output has power purchase agreements with electric utilities while the rest are sold to the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market. It is capable of providing ancillary services necessary to maintain the grid. Magat HEPP is designed to produce up to 540 MW. SNAP-Magat is undertaking a pre-feasibility study on the installation of a pump-storage system to enable more efficient use of water and add capacity of up to 115 MW. It is also undegoing Half-life refurbishment targeted until 2017 to preserve the unit's remaining life and continuance of its availability. In 2009, the Magat plant was conferred with the Certification to the standard set in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHSAS) 18001:2007. It also received its certification for Quality Management System (QMS) ISO 9001 in 2010.
