SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH

A tour of metro Manila churches is a step back in time. Churches make good studies of old and new architecture, aside from being legacies of our colonial past. Outstanding is the 17th-century San Agustin Church in intramuros. Built in 1578 and completed(along with it's monastery) in 1604, the church is patterned after the magnificent churches In Mexico with it's classic lines and flower-sculpture main door, a reminder of Spain's golden age in the country. The remains of Spanish conquerors Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Juan de Salcedo are in this church. Nearby is an San Agustin Museum, which houses one of the best collections of religious art and objects.

Still in intramuros, there is the remodelled manila cathedral fronting plaza roma and beside it the new Palacio del gobernador on aduana. Known for its elaborate and ornamental style, the first parochial church of manila was built in 1571 and was destroyed five times by earthquake, fire, and the bombing of manila in 1945.

Also worth a visit, after you have seen the old quiapo church and the black Nazarene, is the Muslim Mosque in quiapo. But if you are a non Muslim, it would be hard to get inside. Ask a Muslim friend, if you have one, how to get there anyway; It's worth a try.

There is a lot to see and discover in the city's churches. Visiting them and taking in what visual features they offer is normally inexpensive, often times free of charge. You may not be able to talk lengthily on art and architecture as experts do, but give yourself a chance. In the end, you may even get hooked on philippine culture and history. Happy Discovery.
