RE: Elsevier Early Career Resources -- How useful is your PhD?

in #phd7 years ago

Thanks for sharing @alketcecaj. I know you have a PhD and I respect you for the years of work and dedication you gave to one field of study. Jumping from academia to industry seems to be a giant leap. But it is all connected. There is big industry surrounding academic research. It really depends on the person not the PhD that makes them useful. Dr Sheba Agarwal-Jans has and advantage because of her understanding of science and the mind of scientist.

I see in this video that having a PhD may be useful in industry but I'm not entirely convinced by this video that having a PhD is more useful than not having one. I heard that PhD stands for Pizza Hut Delivery Man. This means that the field is specific that there is no practical use to get a job. Fortunately Dr. Agaral-Jans was able to use her experience in science for the publishing market.

Well Steve Jobs had no degree and he is still influential several years after his death. So I understand your scepticism. However, higher education such as MSc or PhD is a big opportunity to learn may things. I wrote here about how earning a PhD changes you and also here about the fun part of making a PhD and in general about my life as a PhD student. I believe it is a great experience and it also teaches you a lot of things. For sure helps you grow a lot, professionally and as a human being.

I will check that out. I smiled a lot to see that the Camel likes Coca Cola. It seems like the most important thing you got out of the PhD was going beyond your limits. Congratulations. I can see you worked your butt off and had fun doing it.

I tried learning code in my free time and often stop after a few lines. I commend you.

Yeah, coding is not easy but with a bit of focus you can learn it. Also it requires parctise almost everyday as you may loose confidence otherwise. I program in Java and R. What language did you choose to program ?

I started Java and then thought I should learn python. I'm not proficient in either. Technology is not my field. I studied science and education but after interactions in Steemit I can see a few ways coding can be useful for me.

Yeah, Python is easier than Java. But what is your field ?

I'm an ELS teacher in Seoul public schools and may teach science. I just got your message about refind today. I will look into it.

Great! I also teach computer science as an assistant professor. Thanks for finding time to check Refind. I think you will find it very useful. If you have a twitter account the signup is very easy as you can sign up with that.

I followed your link but I haven't used twitter in a while and have to dig out my password. That is a cool video you resteemed:)
