Traveling With Your Pet

Planning a trip with Fifi or Fido this year? If so, you are not alone! As many as 30 million Americans will take a trip with their pet this year.

According to the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association one out of every 5 dog owners take their “best friend” with them when they travel. Allen Kay, of the Travel Industry Association of America says, “We have 30 million Americans who travel with their pets and it’s more than just to the grocery store, it’s 50 miles or more.”

With Americans’ desire to travel with their pet increasing exponentially, those in the travel industry are making moves to accommodate guests with pets. And that’s a good thing!

The American Automobile Association recommends the following when traveling with your pet.

1. Bring along a sturdy, well-ventilated carrier or crate.

2. Make sure your pet has a collar or harness with identification tags.

3. Always keep your pet leashed unless you are visiting a fenced-in area like a dog park.

4. Pack healthy food, snacks and lots of water for you and your pet.

5. Don’t forget food and water bowls.

6. Remember to bring any medications your pet needs.

7. Bring your pet’s favorite bed, blanket and lots of toys.

8. Carry biodegradable pickup bags with you at all times.

9. Pack a Pet First Aid Kit and make sure you know your veterinarian’s phone number in case of an emergency.

10. Take a current photo and keep a written description of your pet in case he or she gets lost.
