The Dog Park

in #pets8 years ago

Although spring has yet to come, it’s never too early to be thinking of taking your dogs to the dog park. I love the dog park, and of course so do Tana and Emma. They love to run around like crazy, chasing other dogs and pretty much doing what dogs do. The dog park can also be a place where accidents happen. A couple of things to look out for at the dog park. Most dogs will be off leash and sometimes not all dogs are as friendly as we’d like so it requires we keep an eye on our dogs when in the park, just to head off any trouble or mischief.

I was once given a thorough tongue lashing because I brought training treats into the park. I was told that bringing food into the park could lead to fights between the dogs. Whatever – I continued to treat train my dog at the park – was less obvious about it to keep the peace. Did you ever notice how regulars at the dog park kinda act like they own the darn place?

Here are a couple of dog park safety tips that I hope will make every trip the the dog park a good one. Try to avoid sprains. Dogs can get pretty excited at the park and playful accidents do happen. Dogs can fall into a hole or just injure themselves playing a little too enthusiastically with their friends resulting in sprains and pulls or just sore muscles and joints. Keep an eye on your dog to avoid these types of accidents. Lacerations. Sometimes even the friendliest wresting between dogs can turn into a little bit more resulting in cuts and scratches. These are common dog park incidents. Try to avoid more aggressive dogs and keep an eye out for objects that could injure your dog, broken tree branches for example. Toxins. Most dog parks have areas of grass. Be aware of any chemicals that may be used on the grass by park maintenance crews, such as fertilizers, snail bait or pesticides. If these products are used at your neighborhood dog park, ask the maintenance crew to avoid these chemicals, find safer products that accomplish the same objective or find another dog park. If you feel your dog has been exposed to harmful chemicals, wash their legs and paws and belly if necessary with warm soap and water and watch for any signs of exposure.

Invaders. Fleas and ticks are readily found at most dog parks and outside areas. Regular preventative treatment for fleas and ticks is a must for your dog.

Pick up after your dog. You’d think this is a no brainer, but you’d be surprised how much dog poop gets left at dog parks. Dog poop can contain harmful internal parasites, viruses and bacteria that can easily be transmitted. Not to mention it’s never nice to step in a pile of it. Many dog parks carry dog poop dispensers, but just to be safe always carry a dog poop bag. If you want to go in style try the Dog BagDana, a very cool looking dog bandana that has a pocket for a dog poop bag. Check out the Dog Bandana Store – they have over 50 different fabrics to choose from. Never be without a poop bag to clean up after your dog. Your dog park neighbors will thank you.

Overheating. No matter what time of year it is, always have plenty of water on hand to quench your dog’s thirst and to prevent overheating. Overheating isn’t just a problem in the summer time or when it’s hot. Be sure to take frequent water breaks so that your dog can stay hydrated. If your dog shows any sign of dehydration – excessive panting, vomiting, sluggishness see a veterinarian immediately. Dog parks are a great place for your dog to run and play, make sure he or she stays safe out there!
