you can treat mange for as little as $12

in #pets4 years ago

Mange is one of the most common issues we deal with in regards to the homeless dog and cat population of Krabi province. Dog's are far more susceptible to the disease than cats because cats tend to spend far more time per day grooming themselves. This much should be obvious.

Mange is caused by very small parasitic mites. While they can (and do) attack all of the dog's body, they seem to prefer to congregate around the ears. Eventually the mites will cause a weakness in the coat and the dog (or cat)'s constant scratching of the affected area will result in near complete removal of the fur in that, or multiple areas.

It starts out as a small issue but then with continued scratching brings on open wounds, which quickly become infected in the heat and humidity of the tropics. Also, these open wounds are popular breeding grounds for flies and other insects... and that can cause an entire new can of literal worms.

The thing about mange is that it is one of the most easily manageable afflictions our little homeless friends can possibly suffer from. One treatment of a prescription medication can eliminate and prevent mites and a wide range of other parasites from ever living on the dog. Of course this will wear off in 3 months but due to the pack animal nature of dogs, they tend to spread the problem far quicker than cats do, who will normally choose to be more solitary animals.

Because of the low expense, this is one of our primary focuses as far as stray dog population treatment is concerned. Of course sterilization is job one, but this is likely our second most frequent directive. Our aim is to identify an entire small area and focus on one pack at a time. Once we are able to treat this group, it enables us to solve the problem of the entire population far more rapidly.

I know that no one breed is "better" than another, but it is still surprising that this fella ended up homeless

I know that most of you are far too far away to consider contributing to our cause, but if you are ever in a position to help a homeless dog with mange at any point in your life, please realize that doing so is NOT an expensive endeavor. For just $4 a month, you can prevent one of the greatest hardships of street animals in existence. Perhaps this sounds like a "selling point" and in many ways it is: The point is that this care, is far less expensive than people might think since the brand name manufacturers of prescription medications have convinced us, via advertising, that these problems can only be solved with great expense.

Since we work with local veterinarians that provide us with medication / treatment at cost, we are able to get around the BS.
