Would You Eat Your Dog or Cat

Today I got in a heated argument with my Coworker. He was trying to convince me that in the United States it is perfectly legal to consume your pet dog or cat. This I thought was preposterous. After all, America is home to PETA, Non-Humans First, and millions of self righteous pet owners. Surely the same citizens that purchase products like coats shoes and glasses for pets would not allow such archaic legislation to exist.

Well I was dead wrong

As of today it is still federally legal to butter up you bulldog, have cat on the cob, and saute your shitsu. Fortunately for pups and cats around the country legislation was implemented in the 90s to prevent the sale an distribution of pet meat. However as long as an owner humanely kills there pet the are free to put it on the dinner table.

My coworker claims that he even considered eating one of his own dogs once. Since he was moving from Puerto Rico to a state with breed legislation against the ownership of his pitbull; He could no bring his beloved pup to the states. He says that he was leaning towards eating his dog because if he put it down then he would just be thrown in the trash(most deceased pets in America and elsewhere are thrown in landfills and mass graves) Now I am no proponent of the sale and distribution of pet meat but my coworker may have had a grim yet interesting point. Over half of all citizens in America are pet owners. This means that means that roughly 100 million pets are just thrown away every 8 years or so.

With all the pets we own Americans spend roughly 1 billion dollars to euthanize pets yearly. This expenditure is rapped up in working hours transportation costs and the plastic bags they get stored in at landfills.
So maybe...just maybe... It might be more ethical, fiscally conservative, and environmentally friendly to eat suitable for consumption pets when they pass.
