We love long-haired cats
Know Your Cat
Cats are cuddly companions that come in many sizes, shapes and colours. Perhaps the most distinguishable feature that any breed possesses is its length of hair. Giving a cat a haircut doesn’t mean it is a shorthair variant, a consistent length will be maintained depending on the genetic lineage of a cat. There are four main cat hair groups that we tend to focus on and they include long-hair, short-hair, medium-hair and no cat at all. Knowing a little about cat hair is important as it will determine many aspects of daily life with your cute kitty.
Long-hair Cats
Long-haired cats possess exactly as the term implies, long hair coats that can reach up to 6 inches per strand. Genetics will dictate the type of coat a cat will don, the gene responsible for long-hair is recessive, making the probability of having a coat substantially lower than that of short-hair.
Coats of long hair cats are often fluffy and will cover the entire body. If a cat has visible tufts coming from the ears, it is most likely a long-haired type, these cats are often seen to live in older environment but since domestication they are found all over the world. It’s important to understand that long haired cats require substantial attention at home. Daily grooming is the bare minimum to keep in mind when getting a long haired cat.
Matted and Stuck
Caring for your long hair kitty can be a little intense but consistency is key. Failure to groom your pet often may lead to an eventual matted state of the fur, hair fibres begin to intertwine and cause tension at the surface area of the skin. Over time, this knotting will tighten and start to bother your cat. If you think your cat is in pain, examination of the body and inspection of the cat is a starting point for diagnosis. Depending on the severity of the knot, loosening may be possible but extreme care should be taken to ensure no damage is done to the skin surface. Sudden force from trying to brush out the mattes can cause ripping and pain. A visit to the vet or professional groomer may be in order, in some cases, shaving of the area is required.
Happy Grooming
Simple and consistent grooming of your cat will keep their fur from becoming matted. There are a number of supplementary fur treatments and we recommend getting a handy cat grooming brush that’s right for your kitty. Regular grooming will help to remove fur that has been shed too, reducing the amount of cat hair left on your furniture and clothes (though not entirely). We will be taking a closer look at cat grooming for all lengths of coat in the near future. Be sure to follow us for when it drops, meow!
