What are Personality Traits and Behavior Markers

in #personality18 days ago

Even though science is moving away from personality types, "hysteroid" and "hysterical personality" are still used. You can find them in books and online. They often have a negative meaning.

What does psychology think of "hysteroids" today? What should you do if you think this describes you?

Types and Classifications

In the past, researchers learned about personality by watching patients. They made types by putting these observations in order.

Many older theories seem simple now to modern psychology.

Hippocrates' ideas about temperaments are a good example. He said there were four types: choleric, sanguine, phlegmatic, and melancholic. He thought temperament came from the balance of fluids in the body: bile, blood, mucus, and black bile. This theory is not accurate today. However, the types and their names are still known.

Sorting things into groups helps us understand the world. But the human mind is complex. It's impossible to make one perfect set of personality types. Scientists and doctors have tried, but no one has succeeded.

Modern psychology and psychiatry don't like strict types. They make things too simple. They can miss important details and ignore how different people are. Sticking to types can be harmful. It can lead to labeling people based on their behavior.

Terms like "hysteroid," "schizoid," and "epileptoid" might still appear in some places. This includes psychology articles, textbooks, and some therapies. But they don't have a real scientific basis. Even common diagnoses, like narcissistic or schizoid personality disorder, are based on informal observations.

Now, psychologists talk about personality traits. Everyone has these traits to different degrees. We all have a "hysterical part" that wants attention. We also have a "schizoid part" that wants to be alone, and a "narcissistic part" that wants praise. This view of personality makes diagnosis easier. People are rarely just one "pure" type.

Each person is a mix of traits, motivations, values, and experiences. This mix comes from biology, society, and psychology. Understanding this helps us find people's problems. Then, we can create plans to help them.

Some people show traits more strongly than others. For example, some have a small "hysterical part," while others have a large one. When a trait is much stronger than others, it's called "character accentuation."

If traits are so strong that they cause problems in life, it's called a personality disorder. This is a medical condition.

So, everyone has hysterical traits, but the amount varies.
