I apologize

Why is this so hard to say?
It only takes two words.
It does not take much of your time.
There will be no catastrophic scenarios after those words have been said.
So why not do it?

Because it is hard to do it, there is a punishment to be paid; it can be used against you, and oftentimes it adds more pressure. We can see this more clearly in public apologies. We live in a world where even when you make concessions that you were wrong, you make a public apology for something you did, in some cases years or maybe decades ago, you are attacked and bullied endlessly by your enemies, by the media, and a great part of society, making it much harder for someone to recognize wrongdoing. This is something we have to do if we want to be better, and it hurts sometimes, and yes, it is tough; enemies will use it against you. There will be a punishment to be paid, but it is the right thing to do.

Some people may wrongly interpret this as a sign of weakness. Recognizing you are wrong and apologizing for wrongdoing is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of maturity. The moment that you are in doubt about whether you should apologize or not, think about all the good things you get with it: it allows you to grow up more as a human being, you can see more clearly your mistakes, it improves the relationship with that person you apologize to, it makes you less likely to make the same mistake again, it makes you more honest. There is a wide range of positive values and good reasons on why you should do it.

At some point, life will put you on the other side of the coin. When she presents you with this opportunity, don't make the life of a man who is willing to accept his mistakes much harder than it is when he sincerely is trying to be better. We should welcome this behavior and make a wise decision on how to proceed next.
