The sentence says he will do anything but he won't study.
I’d do anything but go into that hole.
Christ could do anything but worship himself.
guess it is not an idiom
In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is listed as an idiom.
an expression in the usage of a language that is peculiar to itself either grammatically (such as no, it wasn't me) or in having a meaning that cannot be derived from the conjoined meanings of its elements (such as ride herd on for "supervise")
second part of definition is closer to me. First part says 'everythig' is an idiom.
For learning a foreign language, besides grammar and vocabulary, we need to learn some peculiar expressions of that language. My goal is to provide an explanation for some of those expressions in English. It is not really important whether or not they fit the definition of an idiom. For example, sometimes I include verbs with prepositions. They may not be exactly idioms, but they sure are important for learners of English as a foreign language.
