RE: Dried Lambsquarter and Magenta Spreen Leaves for Wintertime Vitamin and Mineral Supplements
Never really ate lambs quarters other then trying a few leaves. I see them a lot around here on job sites and wherever the earth has been disturbed a lot. Not as much out on pasture, probably because of the perennial grasses they have to compete with.
A couple summers ago one of my dads friends dumped some dirt in one of the pastures just to get rid of it leaving a bunch of mounds. Before long they were covered in lambs quarters and I was considering waiting and harvesting some seeds. They were good looking specimins, very tall and healthy.
That was until a few cattle were rotated into that pasture. They stripped all the leaves off just leaving bare stalks sticking up. I guess cattle like lambs quarters too!
LOL! I don't blame those cows for loving the lambs quarters. I wonder, did they ever grow back and reseed or did the cows just decimate them?
They were decimated! I checked a few times thinking they might grow back but no luck.
I wonder if there was some mineral or vitamin in the lambs quarters those cattle were deficient in? I have heard that animals have a sense what there bodies need nutritionally.
Interesting question! I've heard that too and I'm not an expert. I would think either they were missing something or they just know what's good for them in an all around tasty and nutritional sort of way :) I guess you could say we are learning from the cows what is good!
