Family background is not destiny.

A European research institute wrote that as an interpretation of relatively less gap of vocabulary between children with and without migration background compared to the gap of their parents.

I think they just being too optimistic about it and forget to include some other scientific facts: significant differences in many domains of competences, in socio-economic status, education of parents between children with and without migration background, high correlational and causal relationship between socio-economic status and competencies, high rate of children with migration background to be assigned in the lowest track of secondary school (in Germany), high rate of people with migration background who have no stable jobs etc.

Moreover, in some countries I know, people`s values were judged not only by their personal abilities but also by their personal “connection”, which in many cases reflect the kind of family they come from.

I know there are people who achieved a lot of fancy things despite being raised by single mother, who worked part time in restaurants or individuals who showed incredible achievements in education though having parents who barely can read and write. But there are only few cases of them compare to many people who have low educational background and less-paid job due to their disadvantage family background. Their parents could not afford high tuition fee of higher education, therefore most of them do not have university degree and cannot compete in the job market. On the other hand, only because some people have parents who are either rich or have authority (in most of cases also both), they don`t need to show an outstanding personal capabilities in order to get a very nice job.

Family background is not destiny? I guess I need to ask them, what they mean by destiny…
