Is it necessary to sleep?

in #people6 years ago

Good morning Steemit community, here I bring you another publication corresponding to the themes of Neurosalud.

Today I bring you this topic that more than one has made us reflect and consider to what extent it is necessary in our lives, even to the point where we can do without it to take more time and be more productive in our daily activities. So what do you think: IS IT NECESSARY TO SLEEP?

THE DREAM

It is a BIOLOGICAL NECESSITY in the human being, which allows us to restore both physical and psychological functions essential for a full functioning and daily performance.

During the great changes occur in the functioning of the organism among which stand out: changes in blood pressure, heart and respiratory rate, body temperature and hormonal secretion.

PHASES OF THE DREAM

There are two stages in the sleep period called:

• Phase of slow sleep or NO REM: which is divided, in turn, into four phases with different characteristics.
• Phase of fast sleep or REM (abbreviations that correspond to its name in English: Rapid Eye Movements or rapid eye movements).

Phase I: is the phase of light sleep in which people are still able to perceive most of the auditory and tactile stimuli. The phase I dream is little or nothing repairing.

Phase II: in this phase the nervous system blocks the access routes of sensory information, which causes a disconnection of the environment and facilitates the activity of sleeping. The phase II sleep is partially repairing, so it is not enough for the rest to be considered complete.

Phase III: it is a deeper dream where the sensory blockage intensifies. In this phase there is no dreaming, there is a decrease of 10 to 30 percent in blood pressure and respiratory rate, and increases the production of growth hormone.

Phase IV: it is the deepest phase of sleep, in which the brain activity is more, it is essential for the physical and psychic recovery of the organism. It is not the typical phase of dreams, but sometimes they can appear, in the form of images, lights, figures without a plot line.

REM phase: In this phase, dreams are presented, in the form of a narrative, with a plot line, even if it is absurd. The brain electrical activity of this phase is fast. The muscle tone is null, it prevents the person asleep materialize their hallucinations and can be hurt.

All these phases alternate in a cyclical way while we sleep every 90 minutes approximately, beginning a new cycle of sleep after that time.

IMPORTANCE OF THE DREAM

Sleep is a basic need of the organism and its satisfaction allows us survival.

NON REM sleep would have a function related to body tissue repair and energy conservation and recovery, while during REM sleep the processes of brain repair would predominate (neuronal reorganization, consolidation and storage of relevant memories and elimination and forgetting of those they are not).

Sleep suppression produces the following:

• Decrease in intellectual performance with concentration and memory utilization difficulties,
• Decrease in the capacity for abstraction and logical reasoning.
• They diminish the reflexes producing an increase of the time necessary to react to a stimulus, which can favor the risk of traffic accidents, domestic and work.
• It increases the likelihood of developing psychiatric disorders, as there are alterations in mood, increasing levels of anxiety and irritability.
• Severe sleep deprivation can precipitate the appearance of hallucinations, neurological alterations and epileptic seizures.

When the possibility of sleeping in an organism is "completely" eliminated, death ensues.

HOW MANY HOURS DO WE RECOMMEND SLEEPING?

The basic needs of sleep are placed on an average of 4 or 5 hours of sleep every 24 hours. They correspond to the minimum necessary to maintain the functions and survival of the organism. The rest of the hours we sleep contribute to improve our well-being and better quality of life

It is estimated that in an average of 8 hours represents the optimal rest point, taking into account that the basic needs of sleep will vary in each person and even the same person does not have the same needs at all times of his life.

However, to maintain balance, the necessary hours of sleep are those that allow us to be well during the day without feeling drowsy until the next night.

I hope you have enjoyed this information and it will help them as well as me not to belittle the importance of a good dream in the improvement of our daily and work activities.

Remember: GOOD LIFE AND HEALTH FOR ALL.
