God chose David: "People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart" 1 Samuel 16:7

With a very simple story, the Bible teaches that God chooses the humble, and thus the last becomes the first. And this story is the story of how God chose David as King of Israel.
The first Book of Samuel relates that God had rejected King Saul for his sins, and that he had ordered the prophet Samuel to anoint a new king. But Saul did not know who this person was, God had told him only to go see Jesse of Bethlehem, because the person God was looking for was one of his sons.
In this way, the First Book of Samuel tells us what the prophet's first impression was when he met Jesse's family, and what God's response was like:
"Samuel did what the LORD said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, ´Do you come in peace?´
Samuel replied, ´Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.´ Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, ´Surely the LORD's anointed stands here before the LORD.´
But the LORD said to Samuel, ´Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.´" 1 Samuel 16:4-7.
This story explains that men tend to judge by first impressions, by what they see, but God's designs are deeper, because God is a pure spirit and thus judges the intentions of men.
The Bible continues the story and explains that the seven sons of Jesse passed before Samuel, but Samuel could not choose any until the prophet asked him if these were all, and Jesse answered that there was only one left, David who was shepherding the sheep, and that young man was the one whom Samuel finally anointed as king. Like Joseph in the book of Genesis, David, who was the last among his brothers, became the first.
