In 1994, Columbia Hospital Corporation merged with HCA, "forming the single largest for-profit health care company in the country." Scott became CEO of Columbia/HCA. According to The New York Times, "[in] less than a decade, Mr. Scott had built a company he founded with two small hospitals in El Paso into the world's largest health care company – a $20 billion giant with about 350 hospitals, 550 home health care offices and score of other medical businesses in 38 states.
March 19, 1997, investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Health and Human Services served search warrants at Columbia/HCA facilities in El Paso and on dozens of doctors with suspected ties to the company. Eight days after the initial raid, Scott signed his last SEC report as a hospital executive. Four months later, the board of directors pressured Scott to resign as Chairman and CEO. He was succeeded by Thomas F. Frist Jr. Scott was paid $9.88 million in a settlement, and left owning 10 million shares of stock then worth more than $350 million.

During Scott's 2000 deposition, he pleaded the Fifth Amendment many times. In settlements reached in 2000 and 2002, Columbia/HCA pleaded guilty to 14 felonies and agreed to a $600+ million fine in what was at the time the largest health care fraud settlement in American history.
Columbia/HCA admitted systematically overcharging the government by claiming marketing costs as reimbursable, by striking illegal deals with home care agencies, and by filing false data about use of hospital space.
They also admitted fraudulently billing Medicare and other health programs by inflating the seriousness of diagnoses and to giving doctors partnerships in company hospitals as a kickback for the doctors referring patients to HCA.
They filed false cost reports, fraudulently billing Medicare for home health care workers, and paid kickbacks in the sale of home health agencies and to doctors to refer patients. In addition, they gave doctors "loans" never intending to be repaid, free rent, free office furniture, and free drugs from hospital pharmacies.
After his departure from Columbia/HCA in 1997, Scott launched Richard L. Scott Investments, based in Naples, Florida.

$1.2 billion Ponzi scheme, one of the largest such in history. On December 1, 2009, Rothstein turned himself in to authorities and was subsequently arrested on charges related to the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). Although his arraignment plea was not guilty, Rothstein cooperated with the Government and reversed his plea to guilty of five federal crimes on January 27, 2010. Rothstein was denied bond by U.S. Magistrate Judge Robin Rosenbaum, who ruled that due to his ability to forge documents, he was considered a flight risk.
In 2009 Rothstein resided at the Federal Detention Center, Miami in Downtown Miami, but was later moved to an undisclosed location and his inmate number removed from the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator webpage.

According to the separate criminal informations filed with the court earlier today, these four defendants were associated with Scott Rothstein and the former Fort Lauderdale law firm of Rothstein Rosenfeldt and Adler, P.A. (RRA). Kusnick was an attorney at the RRA firm. Corte and Renie were both employees of RAA’s information technology (IT) department. Caputi, who was an associate of Rothstein, posed as a banker and plaintiff in the fictitious cases offered to investors. The four were charged in three informations with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 371. If convicted, the defendants face a maximum statutory sentence of up to five years in prison.

Lewis was convicted Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein’s partner. Villegas’ wife also worked with Rothstein as his chief operating officer. “Rothstein was somewhat tied into organized crime,” Villegas’ lawyer said. “Rothstein was involved in a Ponzi scheme making tons and tons of money, and perhaps there are certain people from the Rothstein firm who found out about this.”

Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein and his slain employee, Melissa Britt Lewis, had an affair when Lewis was a law student, according to Debra Villegas.
The alleged affair, which Villegas revealed in a videotaped statement to Plantation police, raises serious questions about Lewis' murder two years ago.
"Scott was having affairs with any student that came into the office," Villegas' lawyer, Paul Lazarus, told police. "And she [Lewis] started out as a student."
But since Rothstein's financial crimes came to light last fall, many outsiders have questioned whether Lewis was killed because she knew about his scheme. Some wonder if Tony Villegas was framed or hired to kill Lewis.
In 1999, Rothstein -- who was also her professor -- hired her as a clerk at his then-fledgling firm. Rothstein was married at the time; Lewis was not. Over the years, Lewis worked her way up at the firm as an employment lawyer.
Lewis' family didn't know about the alleged affair, Villegas said. "Nobody knows it; it's something she's ashamed of.
"There were three other people in the firm Scott had relationships with," she added."It was a joke around the office that Scott had these relationships."
Although the affair had ended, Villegas says it's the reason Lewis briefly left RRA at one point and went to work for another firm, Shutts & Bowen. "The other attorneys were always talking about it, and she just felt uncomfortable," Villegas said.
But that's not the explanation Lewis' family gave for her brief exodus from RRA. Her family said Lewis couldn't stand Rothstein.

When Lewis came back to RRA, she was supervised by Stuart Rosenfeldt instead of Rothstein. Shortly before she was killed, she became a partner at the firm.
Another former Nova Southeastern law student and RRA law clerk, Julie Timmerman, committed suicide in January of this year. Rothstein put Timmerman through law school. Police have vehemently denied that her death had anything to do with Rothstein.

Rothstein hired Jenne's father, former sheriff and convicted felon, Ken Jenne, as a consultant at his law firm days after Jenne was released from prison on corruption charges. An attorney for Rothstein's law firm serves as the registered agent for Evan Jenne's company, Blue Banyan. Grant Smith, a lifelong friend of Evan Jenne's, is an Edify lobbyist. Edify has worked closely with the state Department of Health to develop wellness programs and also influences certain health-care legislation.
So how many compromised from this?
He was ostensibly an affluent and successful attorney with all the material trappings of a flamboyant lifestyle, including armed body guards and police protection. Twenty-eight city police officials, including captains, majors, undercover officers and the department spokesman, helped guard his home and businesses, the only person in the department's history to have permanent round-the-clock off-duty police protection at his home. The department suspended all work for Rothstein on November 2, 2009.

The Information against Howard Kusnick alleges that, while an attorney at RRA, Kusnick engaged in a scheme to defraud two clients of RRA by authoring a letter purporting to settle pending litigation in the clients’ favor. In fact, however, no such litigation had been instituted and no such settlement existed. Rather, the purpose of the letter was to lull the clients into believing that RRA was pursuing litigation on their behalf when, in fact, the clients’ funds had been used to pay off earlier investors and to further the investment fraud scheme.
The information against Stephen Caputi alleges that Caputi at times acted as both a purported banker and plaintiff during meetings with potential investors. For example, the Information alleges that Caputi, posing as an official from TD Bank, provided investors with fraudulent bank statements that reflected purported balances of trust accounts at TD Bank. In this way, Caputi lulled the investors into believing that the account balances were sufficient to fund their investments. On another occasion, Caputi posed as a plaintiff during a meeting with potential investors who had requested to meet with plaintiffs. Caputi pretended to be a plaintiff who had purportedly executed a $10,000,000 settlement agreement, thus raising potential investors’ confidence in the deal.

Rosenfeldt and Adler both admitted they made illegal political contributions, that were reimbursed by Rothstein and law firm funds, to get around campaign finance laws.
Rothstein never appeared for a deposition, noticed in the bankruptcy case by investors' attorney John Genovese at Genovese's law office.
Banyon and other Rothstein investors' accounts were held at a Toronto-Dominion Bank branch in Fort Lauderdale.[
