I don't know. I'm with you about it being an elite few who are doing the most damage; maybe that means the problems are not just a matter of too many people. Maybe what the world needs is an actual sustainable lifestyle for people, but what would that look like?

All of that misses the main point: What is the carrying capacity for the earth? Even if we aren't there yet, how many people are too many? The number can't rise forever, right?

If the population continues to rise exponentially, at some point it will exceed the ability of technology to sustain it. The interesting thing is that the population rise has slowed down somewhat in the last 50 years, for various reasons. It's still increasing, but not as fast as it was.
This "technology is needed to feed the people" mentality is what corporations like Monsanto use to justify their GMO crops and their weed poisons that they feed us with. It doesn't actually increase crop production, but it certainly does increase their profits.
