Gardens Party #11 - The Garden of Curiosities - Le jardin des curiosités - (EN/FR)

The garden of curiosities really bears its name, it is a curiosity! It is one of my favorite walks and I always hesitate to talk about it because I would like to jealously keep its secret and quiet charm if possible. Also known as the Montreal Garden, the Abbé-Larue Lookout or the Belvedere Garden, it is located on the side of St Just Hill, with a hidden entrance at the bottom of a parking lot! From the screened entrance, a few meters of slope lead you to the garden esplanade, which offers an unexpected and breathtaking view of the city of Lyon. Overlooking the historic centre, the panorama embraces the whole city as if it were at our feet, with a surprising impression of proximity, that we do not find heights of Fourvière. It feels like a hiding place, even though the park is very popular with the many students in the neighbourhood.

Le jardin des curiosités porte vraiment bien son nom, il est une curiosité ! C'est l'une de mes promenades préférées et j'hésite toujours à en parler car j'aimerais en garder jalousement le secret et le charme tranquille si c'était possible. Connu également sous le nom de jardin de Montréal, le belvédère Abbé-Larue ou encore le jardin du Belvédère, il est situé sur le flanc de la colline de St Just, avec une entrée cachée au fond d'un parking! Depuis l'entrée grillagée, quelques mètres en pente vous amènent sur l'esplanade du jardin qui offre une vue inattendue et stupéfiante sur la ville de Lyon. En surplomb du centre historique, le panorama embrasse toute la ville comme si elle était à nos pieds, avec une surprenante impression de proximité, que l'on ne trouve pas des hauteurs de Fourvière. On s'y sent comme dans une cachette, même si le parc est très fréquenté par les nombreux étudiants du quartier.

The other surprise comes from the installation of six designer stainless steel chairs sealed to the floor under a row of protective trees. This work by Quebec sculptor Michel Goulet is a replica of six chairs installed at the Belvedere of Parc Lafontaire in Montreal. Each chair has on its seat an inscription engraved in the full thickness of the material? recalling 20 years of exchange relations between the 2 metropolises. Opened in August 2001, the Parc des curiosités was created by the Montreal architectural and urban design agency and the Canadian agency Vlan Paysages. But you will have understood that it is not the plant part that is the attraction of this garden, but the magnificent landscape and this installation that make it a welcoming and moving place, suitable for knowledge, contemplation, dreaming and relaxation.

L'autre surprise vient de l'installation de six chaises design en acier inoxydable scellées au sol sous une rangée d'acacias protecteurs. Cette œuvre du sculpteur québécois Michel Goulet est une réplique de six chaises installées au Belvédère du Parc Lafontaire à Montréal. Chaque chaise porte sur son siège une inscription gravée dans l'épaisseur du matériau, rappelant 20 ans de relations d'échange entre les 2 métropoles. Inauguré en août 2001, le Parc des curiosités a été créé par l'agence d'architecture et de design urbain de Montréal et l'agence canadienne Vlan Paysages. Mais vous aurez compris que ce n'est pas la partie végétale qui est l'attrait de ce jardin, mais le paysage magnifique et cette installation qui en font un lieu accueillant et émouvant, propice à la connaissance, la contemplation, le rêve et la détente.
