Hidden Treasure

in #partiko6 years ago (edited)

I heard the whining coming from the abandoned shed as I walked by the shack next door. The people who lived there had packed hastily the day before and shoved bags and boxes in a beat up van. The house door was still ajar but no one remained. Garbage bags lay partially open on the porch. Good riddance, I thought as I walked by. The loud parties were ruckus and cursing rolled out late into the night. I was glad they had been evicted.

The whining drew me to the closed shed door. I stepped through the filth and overgrowth wondering how people could live that way. The smell was overwhelming and I raised a corner of my shirt to cover my face as I pulled on the shed door. The glass of the window was shattered and the whining intensified as I neared the door.

I pulled hard. The door gave way beneath my hand and slowly pulled open with resistance. Inside it was dark and the odor pungent. I shone my phone's flashlight around the interior of the shed until I discovered a small short haired puppy. It was tied to a broken chair in the corner near an empty water bowl and a plastic food bowl caked with old dried food. The puppy jumped and moved under the chair, its tail locked beneath its short legs.

Speaking soothing words, I worked on the grimy rope securing the pup until it was free and scooped it up into my chest.

I cursed softly under my breath and walked to my apartment to the bathroom. Running a warm bath I sat the pup in the tub and soaped it up as it wriggled and cried at the ministrations. A golden fur emerged from the caked on dirt as it swirled in the water.

Gently drying the pup, I determined now it was a little girl. Her crying abated and I set to finding food in my refrigerator appropriate for a puppy and fed her.

"Well, my little Treasure....meet your new home."

She curled up on an old blanket and lay down to sleep by my feet.

Ohhhhh!!! This sounds like the sort of thing @rhondak dedicated her life to. She's in Appalachia. It's one horror story like this one (abandonment! a puppy!) after another. Oddly, I see a crazy amount of animal abuse and neglect in the Midwest too. It's not just in Appalachia. I love your story. Thanks for the happy ending!

Yes, I love @rhondak work with animals there. I think animal neglect and abuse is just too rampant. I'm glad you liked my story! My writing has been so erratic with all the migraines but once in awhile I can throw something up. Have a wonderful weekend!

Oh no! I hope you conquer the migraines. Most of my life I've had chronic daily headache, and I've undergone more tests and failed experiments with Rx meds than I care to recall. Last week, my doctor advised against dry-needling, and from experience I know acupuncture and chiropractic never worked. Diet helps: for me, no gluten, dairy, eggs, amaranth, yeast, etc etc. I'm thinking of botox for headaches, but that would necessitate trusting another neurosurgeon ("never again," I had vowed). The list of food triggers for migraine is daunting and depressing - give up everything but sallmon and kale for six week, it seems, and gradually re-introduce the wine, citrus, chocolate, vinegar-based foods, nightshades (potatoes! peppers!), tomatoes, tea, coffee, etc, etc. I've never done it. I just complain of chronic daily headaches and no pain killers because they all cause tinnitus. (Reall loud ringing in the ears.) CBD oil, I've read, is really not as effective as motrin, but maybe it'd work without causing tinntus.I hope you fnd something soon that works. (I'm on amitryptiline, celexa, atenolol. Too many pills. I hate it.) Good luck!

Ugh! So sorry you suffer, too. I am on botox injections. None of the preventive work for me. I used triptans for rescue medication until my neurologist diagnosed me with hemeplegic migraine and chronic traumatic migraine (car accident _ pedestrian_head injury in 2000) my biggest trigger seems to be barometric pressure. One day at a time, they say. I think a move out of Pennsylvania when possible to get away from the extreme barometric shifts will have to happen. Have a wonderful day!

Thank you for sharing this! Has the botox helped?
You were hit by a car, as a pedestrian??
Many head injuries (including car accident) for me too. Barometric pressure- the biggest trigger - I can believe it (the Midwest being no better than Pennsylvania for that). Preventives work better than nothing for me but the side effects are hardly worth the small decrease in headaches. "Hemiplegic" sounds scary (like pariplegic) - weakness on one side of the body in addition to the migraine pain - sounds like you can ignore the Banned Foods list. (I've tried. It's not placebo effect or imagination, as my dad would have me believe. For me it's no dairy, no eggs, no gluten. No cookies, cakes, pies, pizza, bread. Dining out is barely possible.) Now I'm looking up Post traumatic headaches - Migraine.com
https://migraine.com/headache-types/post-traumatic-headaches/

The botox they supposed to reduce the frequency and severity. I'm coming to the conclusion that it mutes the actual head pain but does not remove all the other not so pleasant symptoms of migraine such as some days I'm overcome with nausea but I can go to work..... I feel like I'm in a huge fog or just stupid at my job, phone customer service job where I'm supposed to be 100% accurate with my responses about somebody's health insurance 100% of the time. Yes, my car slid into a field on black ice and I was walking away from my car when a big fluke occurred and a young woman hit the same black eyes and got thrown into the same field I'm froze at her wheel and hit me... The rest is history. I lived ❤.

Ohhhhhhhh my gaaaaawwwwwd. Your car slides off the road. You walk away from this mishap, only to have another driver slide right into you. What kind of luck is that! Much as I hate hearing "It could've been worse," I've seen news accounts of young police officers getting slammed by a semi after stopping to help an accident victim. It seems to be statistically more common than we would think. I hate these stories!! The odds of winning the lottery have to be greater than getting hit by all these vehicles while standing away from the pavement. -_- Thank you for the info on botox, and sorry it isn't working for you, and hoping you soon find something that does!!!

I do enjoy a story with a happy ending!

Such sweet ending!!! <3
