A Crank's Just Desserts
A Crank's Just Desserts
Ethel set a cup of coffee on the table near Earl. He picked it up without glancing at her while reading the morning paper. Taking a sip, his lips curled and he spat,"Woman, there's grounds in this coffee! Dump the pot and start over for Pete's sake!"
Ethel cowered and took the cup, pouring it down the drain. She dumped the pot of coffee and began again. While it brewed, she made eggs and toast. Ethel brought a plate to Earl who put a fork in the eggs and tasted a bite before wrinkling his nose. "How many years have you been trying to cook eggs right, Ethel??"
Ethel sighed and headed back to the kitchen without a word.
Suddenly, Earl heard a whooshing sound in the kitchen and he struggled to get up on arthritic knees calling, "Ethel, did you blow yerself up??"
In the kitchen on the floor was the apron, Ethels dress and slippers and not another sound.
Earl looked around for Ethel for a week, two, three, but she never came back. He sat at the table with burnt eggs and watery coffee reading a newspaper article about missing persons and longed for Ethel's cooking.

A perfect title with a perfect ending. Serves him right. : )
How is your first week back to work going? You must be exhausted and I hope you are not in much pain.
Thank you, and I thought it served him right! The first couple days were pretty brutal. Today was a little bit better and then I had physical therapy after work. Of course I had no energy to cook so I made a couple of bean burritos and called it a night. One day at a time. Thank you for being so sweet and asking after me. Have a great night!

I love the fact that Ethel just got the hell out. Serves the cranky old Earl right. I wish more women had the nerve to do what Ethel did. And then he had the nerve to only be missing her cooking.
Glad you enjoyed the story and you are right, Earl didn't deserve anything except for kick in the pants.
