A Conversation on Reincarnation

"Be careful...you could write your heart out," she said, leaning over a piece of lined paper.

The things she said made her blush, then cry and when the weeping ceased she wrote over tear drop stains the spilled over like ink blots in an ancient time.

"You're making history, you know. With your great drops of blood and time worn truth," and she smiled that crooked smile only people who know themselves seem to smile.

"You can't live carefully and you shouldn't live light. Life is heavy and meant to be hefted and carried on broad shoulders."

You laughed between periods because that time was gone, not gone, but spent like your very last dollar. It should be spent on something you like, not just on something you need. There are always needful things and anyone can buy those.

"Who's that writer pattering paper like rain on puddles?"

"That's a historian," you say. The confidence with which you speak it puts a girl to shame, but pride is not your downfall. Not these days, you think. But I think maybe not ever.

"I couldn't do it, I say. Its not in me. But you, you have all the right stuff."

You twirl the pen looking backwards into your head, that beautiful, spectacular head sitting like a flag on a pole wafting in the summer breeze.

I think to myself it's never half mast.

"There's a book in you, or something, maybe at least a letter or poem. But what about all the rest?"

You look at me with questioning eyes. "You really don't know, do you?"

I said, "No,"and that pen keeps flying like a forest fire out of control.

Even water doesn't put those kind of fires out. They burn a swath miles wide and eat up life as they go, leaving hot embers and lots of smoke behind like a path of snakes chased from the grass.

"Yes," you say, "but new life sprouts from richest soil and all this starts over again."
