Meet Venezuela: The Waraira Repano!

Cerro el Avila or Waraira Repano National Park is located in north-central Venezuela, its name is indigenous,coming from the Caribbean ethnic group that means "Sierra Grande" and extends from Caracas, passing through the whole south of the estate Vargas to the north of Miranda estate.

In 1958 it is declared national park.This mountainous formation is considered as the biggest plant lung of the city Caracas and one the most important of the country. Being located north of large population centers such as Caracas,Guarenas,Guatire,this is national park serves as place of entertainment for thousands of people.

Within it we can realize different activities to be one of the main tourist attractions of the capital of Venezuela,in height is concerned,since its height varies from 120 to 2,765 meters above sea level.

The park has four important peaks: El Ávila,which although it is the lowest,counts with about 2,250 meters of height;the Pico Occidentales continues at an altitude of 2,480 meters,the Pico Oriental with 2,640 meters and finally the highest point of the park with 2,765 meters in height,Pico Naiguatá.

We also have the Caracas Cable Car,a tourist cable car built in the mid-20th century,which runs from Caracas to Pico el Ávila.

The national park is constituted mainly by metámorfics rocks that correspond to the cretaceous,that rest on a nucleus of granite.

The ecosystems present in Waraira Repano National Park are:

Xerophytic vegetation (120-300 meters),semi-deciduous forests (600-800 meters), evergreen forests (800-1,500 meters),cloud forests (1,500-2,200 meters),vegetation sub-páramo (2,200-2,275 meters),

In the forests they are trópofilos,abundant species like the orchinds,ferns,bromeliáceas,aráceas and palm trees.

In upper regions,such as the Naiguatá Peak,there is a characteristic vegetation of sub-páramo,constitute by shrubs that go between,1 to 3 meters of height,with a herbaceous layer considerably well developed,being the most characteristic species the Libanothamnus neriifolius,Castilleja fissiofolia and liabum megacephalum.

As for the fauna,it is very varied,here we can find birds,at the least thirteen species are endemic, it is possible to mention the Christ was, the Querre-querre,the Turpialy about 36 species of hummingbirds.

On the other hand,the reptiles,are represented mainly by the snakes,among which stand out the Cascabel and the Butterfly Tigra,in addiction also are very common the Camaleón and the Iguana.

Among the mammals that have developed in this habitat of the park we have:Cachicamo,Cunaguaro,Lapa,Porcupine,Puma,Rabipelado,Zorro,among others.
