Blog: Camping at Death Valley with My 2 year Old

in #parenting6 years ago (edited)

Me and my husband has done a lot of camping in the last 7 years . But this was special because we had our daughter(less than 2 year old) with us. image image image

We camped one night at Death Valley on a road trip to Las Vegas from San Francisco December 2015. We had a couple friends with us. We celebrated that New year (2016) at Vegas. image image
We started driving early morning to reach at Death Valley National park before dark. It was 480 miles (8 hours) long trip from our home. The park has multiple campgrounds to choose from. We chose Panamint Valley on the western edge of Death Valley National Park as they have a restaurant there with nice restrooms very close to the campground. That was the only restaurant in the beautiful Panamint Valley and its atleast an hour from any other restaurant or campground. image
Just after reaching we put up the tents and had dinner at the restaurant. Considering the remote location it was delicious at a high but fair price. image image image image

Death Valley weather is famous as the hottest place on earth. But in the night, its a differet story. It was freezing cold. We built a campfire and wore jackets. While we all adults were freezing , kiara seems perfectly fine in her sweater. I was a little worried that she is not wearing a jacket . But it's also true that children often really don't feel cold even when their parents do. They are naturally so active that their bodies are generating enough heat to keep them feeling warm, even if they arent. She is very active and was enjoying the campfire by collecting sticks and throwing them in the fire. We had to supervise her exclusively to keep her in a safe distance from the fire. image

I must say that the starry sky view at Death Valley is amazing. You can just look up and see countless amounts of stars. It is the third largest international dark sky park. In the winter and spring seasons, park offer night sky programs. The view itself is worth spending a night there.

We brought pillows and blankets along with the sleeping bags>quote for extra comfort. And Kiara brought her mickey mouse as well. Its a good idea to bring a familiar toy for the kids to hold onto at night. It can be difficult to get sleep in a new place. image image image

Morning in the park was so pleasant and chilly. We had breakfast and took some pictures in front of our tents. Then we started packing and headed to Las Vegas for the New Year celebration. image image
We stopped at the Mesquite Sand Dunes on the way. image image image We love our little adventures with our daughter. Especially if its something that allow us spend quality time together.Have you ever done camping ? I would love to hear your experiences

Thank you for reading!

What a sweet post and a sweeter family. I enjoyed hearing about your camping adventures. You are a good blogger. I read your last post about the birthday party but it was too old for me to upvote.

I wanted to say about the party and your anxiety about it being perfect and pressured to make it perfect. Been there, done that. I like that you keep it private - her birth was a private time too.

You and your hubby seem like good people and great parents.

I'm in awe that your little girl travelled so well at that age. Our kids were not campers and didn't travel well. We did day trips - my husband is definitely not a camper. Now that they are grown with families of their own, two of them are big campers and out door adventurous people. Funny how that happens.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog. We are grateful that our daughter travels so good and enjoy the outdoors. Hopefully she will stay that way. Am glad your kids are good campers now. Thanks again for all the kind words.

Thank you. Its great to know they turned out adventurous , are they here on Steemit ?

No, just me and my husband @johnjgeddes.

That’s awesome that you’re introducing camping to your young one!! Can’t wait until I have kids one day to do the same :)

This looks like a wonderful trip. The park is so beautiful. How did Kiara do sleeping in the tent? I have a little girl a similar age and think camping would be so fun :)

Thank you @thriftymum. Kiara slept very well. She is almost 4 now and loves camping and sleeping inside the tent. You can try a one night camping close to your home first. In case you want to come back sooner than expected. But most kids love camping. Its a fun experience for them.

is it possible to hike in the mountains of the valley? the view from one of those should be amazing

Yes, Death Valley has a lot of awesome options for hiking depending on what you are looking for @manuelmendez.

Looks like a great experience! I went always camping with my parents and I loved it(and miss it).

It was a great experience for us, especially for Kiara. Thank you !

Wow, wondrous camping story Pictorial!
