Janice J. Beaty’s best-selling Observing Development of the Young Child teaches its audience how to observe, record, and interpret the development of children ages three through five by utilizing a unique checklist to document each aspect of development. This proven resource discusses what these young children are like, and how to support them in their early development with exciting hands-on activities.

From the book I mentioned above, I attach a Child Development Checklist for children ages 3 through 5 for informally observing and recording children’s natural development. It is a recording tool that can help observers determine each child development (Beaty, 2013, p. 5). It took about 3 months for me to observe my child based on different criteria. I acted like a detective who followed the personal life of my little child. These observations were done either individually or within a group whenever she was at home or attending a group play activity. Kindly take note that every child can learn differently and this is my checklist for your reference only.

What is child observation?

Observation is an essential tool that helps you to put our Child Psychology’ theory into practice.

Why use checklists?

Checklists are measurable and can be done easily in daily life. They are observations of a specific list of items, skills, or behaviours to be performed. Checklists here provide a response of items in “not observed, beginning, developing and consistency” as well as other comments can be completed during the observation period or later.

I will update you with a running record providing child’ facial expressions, her interactions with materials and people and spoken language in next blog.
