How To Be 4n Years Old On Your nth Birthday
The protagonist of The Pirates of Penzance is Frederic. Frederic is interesting because he has reached the age of 21 after only 5 birthdays. How is this possible? The trick is that age is elapsed time, but a birthday has to fall on an exact date. Frederic's age is explained by this distinction together with the fact that February 29 comes less than once a year. Thus Frederic's situation is absurd, but not impossible. It is a kind of paradox.
