360 degrees panoramic photography on Steemit - alternative views

in #panoramic6 years ago (edited)

As steemit does not include a way to watch 360 degrees photography like it is possible on google maps or facebook, I have to use alternative ways of presenting my panoramic photographies. And in deed, there are alternatives, maybe less realistic but more artistic instead. In fact, there is - except from the "normal" equirectangular 2:1 image - only one way of displaying 360 degrees panoramas on a 2-dimensional screen which is called stereographic projection, also known as 'little planet view'. It means that you can project a 360 degrees panorama or a sphere to a 2-D surface in a way that the panorama is looking like a detached little planet shot from high above - although the photo was shot from the ground. Here are some examples of 360 degrees photos taken from the ground with a tripod or a monopod:

The first 2 photos I shot during a wonderful holiday trip in Majorca starting with a photo taken on my way to Cap de Formentor in the north of Majorca during a stop at the stunning 'Mirador es Colomer'.

The other photo was shot in the lovely Cala Mata in the Alcúdia Bay.

Another photo wasn't made on the ground but with a 6 meter's long pole, so You'll get even more a feeling of hovering in the air. This photo was made in the city of my beloved hometown Kiel in northern Germany which is situated at the baltic sea - more exactly I was standing on a famous pedestrian bascule bridge which is crossing over the Kiel fjord and connecting the eastern and the western parts of Kiel.

You like it but You like it even higher? No problem, here are some photos shot with a camera mounted on a drone. This was a quite difficult way of shooting 360 degrees photos as I didn't work with any support like gimbals or first person view. The drone had be be fixed in the air and then turning around shooting photos with intervalls. As it was impossible to stand still in the air it took me hours of hard work to stitch the single photos together without errors.

The first photo was made near my hometown high above a nice beach near the point where the Kiel fjord is ending near the open baltic sea.

and this photo isn't made very far away from the first one. It's an aerial shot above the Kiel Canal - the most frequented artificial water street in the world.

If You like those 'planet views' way more artistic take a look at these two photos. The first is a sunset shot from a 30 centimeters mini-pole stuck directly into the beach gras. You got it?

And the other one is a more zoomed-in photo shot in a nice winter forest. Both photos of course have been colour edited to get a special atmosphere.

This kind of 'little planet views' is the best way to show as much as possible of a 360 degrees photo. But sometimes it's also a great way to present 360 degrees photos "normally", just like they are originally saved - in a 2:1 format. Depending on the subject it can also be very nice to show a photo in this way. Look at these photos which show a total angle of 360 degrees horizontally and 180 degrees vertically:

beach chairs on a baltic beach, a kind of a coloured black/white photo

or an old wall at the fjord of Kiel

And last but not least, as you have seen the total surrounding, you of course can cut out every part of a photo you like - and you'll get a "normal" photo, or a photo with an extreme wide angle. So, here are my last examples, some wide-angled panoramas:

The first is another aerial panorama made with a drone, a stunning sunset over the baltic holiday village Laboe.

The next one is another stunning way of photographing 360 degrees. This photo was made with a long pole which I horizontally positioned over the abysm of Cap de Formentor in Majorca - taking a photo of my lovely daughter.

The next photo is showing a Kiel fjord's ferry terminal during a beautiful sunset.

On the other side of Kiel fjord I shot a nice sunrise photo .

And the last photo, one more baltic sunset.

I hope you're enjoying these photos. As long as steemit is not ready to embed real 360 degrees photos, you have to be content with these alternative ways to present them. And if you like to watch them in real 360 degrees, you're invited to visit
