What if there was a technology that could authenticate exchanges between billions of people, that replaced the need for hierarchies to oversee transactions (presidents, governments, institutions), a form of “trust technology” that would act as an extension of the species similar to a book or a telescope or the media and McLuhans’ “prostheses of the mind”.
Public-private key cryptography, hypothesised in the 60s and gradually developed under the following decades, has certain properties that allow billions or trillions of people to all operate within a single state, with transactions authenticated using “mathematical norms” rather than human oversight, a form of “proof-of-identity”.
