"SQUIRRELZILLA!" - My First Acrylic Painting Ever
A few days ago I found a great article about the Eurasian red squirrel, with excellent photos from the backyard of our friend @johannpiber. That inspired me to paint a picture in acrylics, for the very first time in my life. That, and the gentle but assertive pressure of @caro-art to try my hand at painting...
"Practice makes perfect" as they say, and that absence of practice is glaringly obvious in my masterpiece ;-) Nevertheless it was fun to try something new and leave my comfort zone of camera and computer. I think Mr. Squirrel has a bit of a grim facial expression, which is why I'm calling this painting "SQUIRRELZILLA!"
For comparison I'm presenting the original photo of @johannpiber with kind permission at the end of this post.

Vor ein paar Tagen fand ich einen tollen Beitrag über das heimische Eichhörnchen, mit klasse Fotos aus dem Garten unseres Freundes @johannpiber. Das hat mich inspiriert, zum ersten Mal im Leben ein Bild in Acryl zu malen. Das, und der sanfte aber bestimmte Druck von @caro-art, doch auch mal das Malen zu probieren...
Bekanntlich macht "Übung den Meister", und dass es an der Übung fehlt, sieht man recht deutlich an meinem Meisterstück ;-) Trotzdem hat es Spaß gemacht, mal was Neues zu probieren und die Komfortzone von Kamera und Computer zu verlassen. Wie ich finde, schaut Herr Eichhorn etwas grimmig aus der Wäsche, weshalb ich das Gemälde "SQUIRRELZILLA!" betitelt habe ;-)
Das Originalfoto von @johannpiber zum Vergleich habe ich mit freundlicher Genehmigung unten eingestellt.

Cool, du hast den Blick des Eichhörnchens genau so gesehen, wie ich, als ich das Foto das erste Mal angeschaut habe.
Also mir gefällt das Bild wirklich gut, und der Zaun schaut auf deinem Bild viel besser aus, als auf dem Foto 😊
Es freut mich wirklich, dich mit meinen Fotos zum Malen inspiriert zu haben, und ich glaube, dass es kein Fehler war.

Das hatte ich eigentlich auch gedacht, aber @caro-art kniet mir schon ewige Zeiten auf der Seele. Und siehe da, es kam etwas Akzeptables dabei raus. Talent ist alledings anders. Das nächste Mal schmiere ich mit ein, zwei Schlückchen Urpils. Wer gut schmiert, der gut fährt. Mo gugge...
It's not a bad first try. You've got representative content well in hand. Next round, I recommend focusing on your color blending and brush strokes.
Yeah, I might just do that, while it is still fun. However, an engineer by trade, this hand-made art business is really too "imperfect", too "unruly" for me. We'll see how often I can jump over my shadow ;-)
Ummm… painting can be quite a complex and exact medium. DaVinci, for example, made a science of it. Look at the precision in botany works, or the old masters' handling of animal and human dissections – those are extremely precise and exact.
Well darlin', luckily, I ain't got them problems 'cause I ain't no DiVinnie ;-)

That's very good. Especially for a first attempt. I went through a phase of painting, mostly abstract art, and I remember how difficult it was. Even abstract art of nothing more than just a mashing of colors is difficult - at least to make it look good lol. So I'm impressed by how realistic your squirrel turned out. Hopefully you keep at it!

Thank you for those kind words. It was all in good fun as my wife @caro-art has a studio (i.e. spare bedroom) in the house with more acrylic paints than I would know what to do with. However, it was a lot more more fun than I would have thought possible so I'll keep at it. Winter is coming - no drone flying = time on my hands :-)
