The Mysterious Little People

Dez parted the drapes and stared out at the landscape below glowing with the eerie moonlight. She knew that if she waited long enough she would see them.

The small people in long red dresses that came and moved silently through the town. No one believed her about the small people so she stopped trying to tell them. She just watched as they moved about and tended to lawns and pets left outside by their owners. Sometimes, if they liked something, they just took it. She'd watched them laughing as they dragged a large chest from someone's basement to the trail behind the town. Swarms of the little people in red would envelop the absconded item and it would disappear, swallowed whole into the dark.

Newspapers wrote lengthy articles about missing items and speculating how they just disappeared. Insurance companies accused owners of spiriting items away to collect insurance and fought the rising number of random claims.

A few horses disappeared in a week. They were just pleasure ponies, so it was not a big deal. An antique clock disappeared from the town's only bank.

The police set several officers up over town to watch for thieves, but the little people in red just floated by them as though they were invisible. Dez knew several of the little people by sight. They all walked with a slightly different gait.

Last night the Owen's new infant, Cammy, disappeared from her crib. The dog never barked and the door was still locked.

Things were getting serious now. Tonight, Dez was determined to follow the little red dressed people back through the pass at the end of town. She hoisted a black backpack onto one shoulder and slipped out the back door. She patted the old pistol she took from Grandpa's drawer and turned in the direction of the pass.
