The Dearly Departed

in #palnet5 years ago

They tromped through the kitchen into the family room leaving a trail of wet carpet in their wake. Mel stared ahead with hands clasped tightly in her lap. The thin summer dress was inadequate against the frigid interior of her heart. The voices of mourners surrounded her like a hive of worker bees where she was queen. She didn't feel like a queen, more like a husk, or a snake skin left by the road. How could he die and leave her alone with this mess?

Her eye twitched and the wall clock stood still. She absently wondered if he ever changed out the batteries like he promised. He probably forgot. She didn't have the energy or will to care. Time was going to have to slow down to match her pace.

Someone handed her a drink, even wrapping her fingers around the ice cold glass. She winced and looked up. It was Ken's sister. Mel never liked her. She bossed her own husband around and the mousy bastard just groveled and said, "yes," all the time.

Mel made up her mind in an instant. She struggled to stand up from the battered sofa swallowing her up in its ruined cushions. Several people moved to assist her but she pushed their hands away.

Once she stood at her impressive 4'11" she surveyed the masses eating, drinking and laughing in her living room and she cleared her throat loudly then yelled, "Get out of our house!" Everyone froze, some stood holding plates and mouths dropped in surprise. Quiet Mel? They thought.

"You heard me. Get the hell out of out this house!"

Several people moved toward the door, but Mel began pushing them toward the door.

"Don't bother to come back to pick Ken's bones. None of you are in his will."

Something snapped in Mel and she pushed her way to the stairs and rushed to her room and watched from the window as one person after the other left the house until it lay as quiet as a mausoleum.

"You can come out now, Ken," Mel called to the closet.

Very well written. I can imagine how that must feel, to have your home filled with supposed mourners who seem to be there for the food and not the grieving. I'm not sure about the closet thing. Is she just wanting that to be true?

Thank you, @blueeyes8960. I am not really sure! It was as if Mel was dictating the scene and it just popped up at the last lol. Maybe he is escaping his family and staged death?
