Frère Jacques - A Freewrite Fiction Story

in #palnet5 years ago (edited)

She stood filled with dust in the basement with hands on hips surveying the collection of past memories from Bri growing up. She didn't want to throw this all away, but the need to downsize brought her downstairs with a purpose.

She boxed up old baby clothes and boxes of dolls and doll clothes. She reminisced about the hundreds of hours sitting at the table cutting out these doll clothes for Bri's Barbie dolls. A smile curved her lips. Well, maybe she'd hang on to those for Bri's future baby.

The corner had all her kitchen bake set items. She knew Susie had a little baby girl and maybe she would welcome these as a diversion for the baby. She moved them all to the center of the room.

Her highchair was way outdated and this and the jumper chair had seen better days. A vision of her now 17 year old college co-ed laughing filled her thoughts. The garbage delivery would be here Monday night.

Last was the pink baby pool. She closed her eyes and remembered the delight of her daughter playing with cups and boats in the pool. She knelt to pick it up only to find a small baby doll sitting staring up at her with blank eyes. She stepped back in surprise. The doll moved. Was she seeing things?

Don't give me away. it seemed to say. You'll need me.

Devine picked her up gently and cradled her. The eyes brightened. Was she seeing things? She stepped in the light by the basement window. The dolls hair shined unusually in the light. A soft laughter rose in the basement. Devine looked into the dim corners and began edging toward the stairs holding the little doll. Someone was was singing

Frère Jacques,
Dormez-vous ?
Sonnez les matines !
Ding, daing, dong

Devine dropped the doll and ran, panting up the stairs. "Bri! Bri!" she screamed. At the top of the stairs she pulled the handle but it was stuck. She banged the door repeatedly, but no one came...

The song grew louder and masked her screams as the lights flickered leaving the basement pitch black and other voices began to sing.

Frère Jacques,
Dormez-vous ?
Sonnez les matines !
Ding, daing, dong

I don't know why that rhyme always has a sinister effect on me when I hear it. This is the first time I am reading it and the feeling is no different. Lovely piece of fiction @wandrnrose7

Thank you so much and it's weird because that little rhyme popped into my head first and foremost in the mood so we must be in agreement of that LOL @warpedpoetic

Whoa, that took a dark turn!
Just when I was identifying with the mother sorting, keeping or not-keeping the childhood items.
Dolls can't be trusted!

lol you know those darn dolls get too spoiled and don't take to damp, dark basements and refuse to be trashed! @carolkean 😁
