That's quite interesting, I literally was looking forward for more of the contest. thanks for listing them, I will surely participate.
We're looking forward to read your stories!
Sure thing, mate. Happy hunting.
The open image of aspen leaf miners, the mazes etched into every leaf over the forest is such a strong image to open on, the hollowing of the heart of the forest, and it going unnoticed!
The lack of understanding regarding religious belief between the friends is so well told, and the depth you give to it. Damn, this is a tough round! The idea of these two friends who have grown up doing so much together, and one of them has found this greater meaning in something, and his friend just doesn't get it. It feels like it has put distance between them, that Anton thinks less of his friend for doing it, and that Gennadiy thinks less of Anton for not getting it, you play it subtle, but you trend that line of how a belief, regardless of what it is in comes between people, especially in kids who maybe don't really understand each other or have fully formed empathy can come between them. The way Genna dismisses him to find a spot to cross the river, and then Anton disrupts what he friend is trying to do. It's almost like a balance of disharmony (if that isn't an oxymoron) how religion leads slowly to people not understanding each other, and really, it is just from a desire to be closer. really, Anton just wants his attention, he doesn't want him to stop and do what he is going to do, and have to leave him in peace for however long, because Anton wants to spend the time with him, but over time, and annoyance, it stops feeling that way.
The two boys don't fully understand the world around them, the forest, what's going on, they notice it's warmer, and therefore the ice will be thinner, but they don't get the wider implication, nor the meaning of the appearance of the invasive species. They also, don't understand each other in a way, although, for as much as they don't understand each other they are coming from exactly the same place (wanting the same thing from each other). They do not know how much they do not know. It almost feels like they are so caught up int themselves, they don't notice Drogol until it is almost too late.
And the sheer breadth of the unknown looms before them in a space ship. Who knows if they would have been able to save Drogol, but it feels as though they didn't appreciate the world around them, the forest passed them by unnoticed, destroyed on a whim, they didn't appreciate each other, and their dog, left to look after himself, no wonder Ursula turned up ;)
Isn't that the way of things. Much like our times today. hmm...
I found the mezen practice when I was looking for constellations. I enjoyed throwing that into the mix. It did lead me to a different middle part than I had in my head originally.
On the site where I found mezen, I found a picture, one that I can't seem to find again, that was set in the nighttime with aliens beeming up cows, trees with eyes and some other things. The picture was awesome but, like I said, I can't find it after looking several times. arrg. Anyway, that picture guided this piece.
aw fuck you had to kill the dog?
ROFLMAO
Oh, no. We don't know if the dog died or not. He was taken by aliens. The possibilities of what could happen to the dog are endless. lol
It's evident how much you cared about the environmental theme throughout the story. It's an interesting take that goes in a different direction from the hints of the prompt. It's also interesting the idea of Gennadiy being a faithful Muslim after learning it from comics. The scene you described animates in the end, after a quieter beginning. Maybe I would have loved more space dedicated to the adventurous part but also like this I have to say that you're always original in the directions you choose!
I spent some time learning about the environment. I think it is sad that so much destruction is happening to forests around the world.
One has to be careful what one reads. 8-) You never know what will happen.
The issue of climate change is becoming really pressing. I think that here in Italy we are one of the few countries in the world where this subject is underestimated by public opinion, distracted as we are by other issues, and it is truly a demerit.
In your story, there are bizarre elements, and the final reference to Ursula whose eyes are chastised is really mysterious to me.
Reading your story has left me with strange sensations, everything that happens is beyond the reach of children: for them both the climate change and the alien spaceship are incomprehensible in the same way, and their actions do not take them away from the role of powerless spectators.
I think it is underestimated by many. There are those who tend to think that our environment is unaffected by the things being done to it within these last 100 years or so. So much destruction.
Be wary of them aliens - you never know what will happen. haha
So of this was inspired by the podcast "The Last Podcast on the Left." I don't follow alien stuff to much but they give a pretty good overview for my tastes.
