Turning Red

Turning Red hit platforms on March 11, and as soon as it arrived, everyone started talking about this movie. I find it curious that a movie that was hated only for a trailer and an idea, is now praised by hundreds of people based, since they have already seen it; many say it's not a big deal (and although they are partly right), but the truth is that I understand the way people defend this movie due to all the boycott that was thrown at it long before it was even released, that is, If someone is doubting a project that is not ready yet, and when it comes out it seems to be something really good, isn't that reason enough to defend and extol that project? I think so, that his fans owe him.

Yo creo que sí, que sus fans se lo deben.

Well, anyway, and the movie isn't even (for me) in Pixar's top five movies, but we're talking about a company that has put out an average of one movie a year for the last twenty-five years or so. Other than that, I think Pixar reached its peak several years ago and has gone downhill from there, but Turning Red is something that raises the bar. In recent years I have not seen Disney do something like this, and despite the fact that I loved Soul in many aspects, the script did not give enough importance to the characters to feel true empathy for everything that happens in the film. , despite being a really strong and interesting topic to deal with in a children's movie.

Many people say that Turning Red is a rehash of movies like Coco, Charm and Brave, and that this new wave of Disney goes one way: revealing yourself to your family when they want to control you and make you someone you're not. It seems incredible to me, seriously, I admire it and I love seeing stories like that, but the point is not that the film touches a repetitive theme in movies today, but how it touches it.

Mucha gente dice que Turning Red es un refrito de películas como Coco, Encanto y Valiente, y que esta nueva ola de Disney va hacía un solo lado: revelarte hacia tu familia cuando esta te quiere controlar y hacer de ti alguien que no eres. A mi me parece increíble, en serio, lo admiro y me encanta ver historias así, pero el punto no es que la película toque un tema repetitivo en las películas de hoy en día, sino el cómo lo toca.

Finally a Disney movie for children dares to show children as they are: annoying, cringy, funny and sometimes arrogant. It is VERY difficult to see in a children's film, that children (pre adolescents in that case) are represented in such a real way. Many movies show children as very innocent people and it seems incredible to me, I understand that fear of making pre-teen characters doing pre-teen things, because the truth is something hard to see. Using one of my favorite example movies, mid90s, we can see how a child is taken to the world of drugs because of his innocence and that is hard to see, but it is something that happens. That's why it's a movie for adults, but a child also needs to feel identified with the characters he sees in pop culture, right? Well, Turning Red understands that and knows how to get the message across without being something a child shouldn't see. It shows us how at that stage we begin to have sexual desires that we do not understand, how we want to dance, we begin to smell different and behave differently without realizing it.

Por fin una película infantil de Disney se atreve a mostrar a los niños tal y como son: fastidiosos, melancólicos, divertidos y en ocasiones prepotentes. Es MUY difícil ver en una película infantil, que los niños (preadolescentes en ese caso) estén representados de una manera tan real. Muchas películas muestran a los niños como personas muy inocentes y me parece increíble, entiendo ese miedo de hacer personajes preadolescentes haciendo cosas de preadolescentes, porque la verdad es algo difícil de ver. Usando una de mis películas de ejemplo favoritas, de mediados de los 90, podemos ver cómo un niño es llevado al mundo de las drogas por su inocencia y eso es difícil de ver, pero es algo que sucede. Por eso es una película para adultos, pero un niño también necesita sentirse identificado con los personajes que ve en la cultura pop, ¿no? Bueno, Turning Red entiende eso y sabe cómo transmitir el mensaje sin ser algo que un niño no debería ver. Nos muestra como en esa etapa empezamos a tener deseos sexuales que no entendemos, como queremos bailar, empezamos a oler diferente ya comportarnos diferente sin darnos cuenta.

-Prisoners: empecé la lista recomendando una película que no tiene mucho que ver, solo porque dos de sus actores actúan en The Batman, y ahora, también recomiendo Prisoners porque Paul Dano (the riddler) hace otro trabajo excepcional en este thriller que va un poco de la mano con el ritmo de The Batman.

I am VERY grateful that Turning Red unscrupulously touches on these themes, while also being subtle enough to remain a children's film, and this I believe is achieved due to its writer-director, who (surely) recreates some of her childhood in a film in which a large part of the public will feel identified.

Agradezco MUCHO que Turning Red toque sin escrúpulos estos temas, y que a su vez sea lo suficientemente sutil como para seguir siendo una película de niños, y esto creo que se logra debido a su directora-escritora, que (seguramente) recrea parte de su infancia en una película en donde gran parte del publico se va a sentir identificado.

Finally, it is not a surprise that the film was inspired by anime that the director watched, since the film feels like an anime made in CGI. “A Pixar movie made a better 3D Ghibli movie than the Ghibli studio itself”, that phrase could not be more accurate when it comes to seeing the expressions, the neons that illuminate the entire visual section and the city, being, in my opinion, apparently the most stylish Pixar movie since possibly The Incredibles.

Por último, no es una sorpresa que la película se haya inspirado en animes que la directora veía, ya que la película se siente como un anime hecho en CGI. “Una película Pixar hizo una mejor película en 3D de Ghibli, que el propio estudio Ghibli”, esa frase no puede acertar más a la hora de ver las expresiones, los neones que iluminan todo el apartado visual y la ciudad, siendo, a mi parecer, la película de Pixar que tiene más estilo desde posiblemente Los Increíbles.
