RE: #WednesdayWalk - Walking in the Garden with the Boss

in #palnet7 years ago

Well I'm truly in awe, there is some special majick happening with Boss' lupin, I mean, the seed is supposed to be cold for a while before planted, they say to refrigerate them first for a week if you try and plant them in the spring, or let mother nature do the job by planting in fall/winter depending on your grow zone. Boss is the Boss!!

Indeed. I did have her soak the seeds in water for a couple days so maybe that worked. Either that or maybe there was a frost after they went in the ground or it was still shaking off the permafrost

Either way, I am hoping they sprout up and I am already looking forward to harvesting the seeds in the fall and planting them then.

It won't flower/seed this year, but next year for sure there will be multiple flowers, and then the year after it will go BOOM!!!

I hope you don’t mind the back and forth of the conversation as I learn from your experiences.

So these little sprouts will just grow and not flower or seed in the first year? If not (seed at least) then do they throw down good roots and grow every year after the winter rest?

Hey, I'm loving the convo, sorry I didn't see this response until now Zeke! Yes, your plant will not produce flowers until next year, it is putting down roots and I believe it will survive the winter, especially if you put some cover on it, like leaf or mulch but I'm thinking your zone is warm enough to not have to cover your miracle lupin!

They say lupin is a 'short lived perennial' lasting about 3 years, however I have seen them go on and on here, for over 5 years so far! And they are so good at propagating themselves, they throw their seeds far and wide.
