Oded Yinon - Hamas & Fatah reconciliation contrived?

in #palestine7 years ago

Palestinian sovereignty for the last decade has looked very grim because of this Fatah Hamas conflict. That was until this week, where Hamas announced that it would be willing to unconditionally stand down and hand its power over to the Palestinian authority. Segregation between the two Palestinian Territories and further war crimes committed against Palestinians is always easier to get away with when there is no unified voice to stand up for all Palestinians. However, on the flip side of this, the legitimacy of this unification should be called into scrutiny, especially since The plan was only set in motion upon Donald Trump announcing to recommence peace talks between Israel and Palestine. Whether there were some back door deals made and the Palestinian leadership was compromised, in not sure. But it shouldn't be ruled out just yet.

The remaining territory of Palestine is currently split into two parts, the West Bank, which is almost entirely occupied by Israel but is officially governed by Fatah and the Palestinian Authority. And The second area, known as the Gaza strip, which is controlled by Hamas. Back in January 2006, Hamas won the election, winning 74 of the 132 seats, however due to international pressure, Hamas was not recognized, so in 2007, they took control of the Gaza Strip by force, which created problems between Fatah and Hamas. As a result of this, there has been an open conflict and disputes between the two Palestinian parties, which has segregated Gazans from the West Bank and Egypt. Much to the delight of the Likud Zionist neocons like bibi Netanyahu, the division between the two territories has made it easier for Israel to assume control and oversight of Palestine. Because of the disunity between Fatah and Hamas, gazans and residents of the West Bank have been living under dual legal systems. A set of laws dictated by Hamas and a set of laws dictated my Fatah and the Palestinian authority, which has made it easier for Netanyahu to reject commencing peace talks between Israel and Palestine a a single body. Even Google maps has taken advantage of this by removing the word Palestine from google maps, and listing the West Bank and gaza as separate territories within the state of Israel.
