hello all steemian friends, art article readers ..!
on this occasion I would like to talk about the work of Italian artist Giuseppe Maria Crespi, also known under the pseudonym of Spagnolo ("Spaniard"), because he is indifferent to Spanish style in clothing.

The painter was born in 1665 in Bologna, where he lived most of his life.

The first drawing lessons were drawn from less well-known local artists DM Kanuti, K. Cignani and A. Burrini. Most admire the work of Antonio da Correggio, Federico Barocci, Guercino, Sebastiano Mazzoni, and Rembrandt. Each of them contributes to the formation of Crespi's artistic style.

Self-portrait, around 1700

Until 1789 this portrait was associated with Domenico Fetti's brush. And only after the work was sent to the Hermitage, art critics have established the authorship of Giuseppe. It is also interesting that on the roentgenogram on the left side of the canvas you can see a woman's face of the same size as in self-portrait.

Throughout his life, the master went to work in Venice, Modena, Florence and many other cities in Italy.

Village Fair

The popular scene of this artist is painted in Florence, in the palace of Duke Ferdinande de 'Medici. Here you can see that Crespi first focuses on the color combinations of costumes, both on clearly defined foreground characters, and on some blurry shapes behind.

Giuseppe is most respected as a master of everyday scenes, but no less successful he paints pictures with religious subjects, mythology, as well as portraits and is still alive. He tries to create the most realistic, vital and emotionally expressive images.

To strengthen the dramatic or romantic direction, Crespi uses a black-and-white effect and dynamic brushstrokes with brown tones, burgundy and black.

In the early period of creativity, painters embraced the classical Bolognese tradition of the 17th century. But in the work written after the age of 26 years, there is a departure from the idealization of plot deliberate.

Flea

This is one of the most famous painting artists. By 2014, its value at auction in New York is about 400 thousand dollars.

The behavior of a girl looking for fleas on her body is so attractive to Giuseppe that he creates 7 variants of this scene. Below is another less popular version.

Crespi's world fame was also received thanks to a series of "Seven Sacraments." This cycle features seven religious rituals, which each person passes through life.

The first sacraments are infant baptisms, the last being a funeral. All the paintings are made in a controlled color palette, which combined with the pose and movement of the main character creates an atmosphere of mental tension. Seeing them, one can not help thinking about how our lives are passing.

Below is the picture I like the most. It depicts the rite of the church through which the believer receives a gift that strengthens him in his spiritual life.
