Liberated Creatures
Indonesia has a history of bird collecting. It’s a bit ironic because free birds are abundant and their song no less so. But humans always need to possess and own... so these poor little birds are chained to perches and their body and song dedicated to their masters.

Despite the un-birdly objective of perching a live bird, the antique perches are carved beautifully and unashamedly painted in bright colors.
I started collecting them about 20 years ago and then in 2010, I realized they could frame a painting. I cut a panel and fitted it in the frame. Being that both sides are carved, I painted both sides of the panel so that the perch could be hung and appreciated by both sides.
This yellow perch became home to some Mantises.

This first post shows two double sided paintings I did. They are unfortunately the only two sided paintings in the series. People wanted to hang them on their wall rather than suspend them. Next post, I will share some of the one sided pieces for those interested...
