Painters - 07 - Claude Monet (1840-1926)

Claude Monet the great modern painter whose interest lay in nature and natural light was born in Le Havre, France in 1859.

After his education in Le Harve as an arts student he moved to Paris for higher education. There he got the opportunity to meet and associate with great painters like Sisley, Ranoir, Pizassao and Bazille.

The five friends soon began painting together outdoors. Unlike Manet and Degas, Monet was not concerned with painting the realities of modern life. His interest lay in nature and the ever-changing natural effects of light. His few paintings of interiors and scenes from urban life are mainly studies of light in a different environment.

Success came to Monet very late, and he and his family had to suffer hardships for many years. His first wife Camille died of cancer in 1879 and thereafter he lived with Alice a woman who got separated from her husband who ran bankrupt.

Monet is best known for his series paintings, in which he explored particular subjects in changing and differing light conditions of various times of the day. His series of haystacks, poplar trees, Waterlilies and Cathedrals are famous among them.

Monet was one of the founders of ‘Impressionism’. His piece ‘Impression, Sunrise’ painted in 1872, gave the movement its name. One of his characteristics was painting the same scene several times, such as ‘Waterlilies’, ‘Gare St Lazare’ and ‘Rouen Cathedral’.

In 1870 he moved to London and stayed with Pissaro and made studies of the River Thames. In 1883 he settled in Giverny a suburb of Paris, and painted the most famous and vibrant work ‘Waterlilies’. As his eyesight was failing by this time his work became increasingly abstract. In this work everything except the lilies and the reflective surface of the pond was eliminated.

Claude Monet died in Giverny in 1926. He was an artistic rebel, an inspiration for the abstract movement and the new school of avante-garde.

‘Women in the Garden’, ‘Lady with Parasol’, ‘Waterlilies’ and ‘Rouen Cathedral’ are his well known paintings.
