Paddling with Crabbeater Seals

It is great to paddle around the Antarctic waters in little protective coves. As you can see from this picture we do get some really beautiful and calm day... it even feels warm! (40degrees). As we paddle our eyes are always open for wildlife. This paddle we came across a Crabeater Seal on a small piece of ice.

Crabeater Seals are the most abundant seal on the planet! Don't believe me because you haven't seen them? It's because they are only found in Antarctica. Their name is misleading because they don't actually eat crabs... they eat Krill (like most things in Antarctica).

You can tell it is a crabbier seal by its coloring, it's dog-like snout, the shape of it's body, and the scarring on it skin. Stay tuned as I post more about Crabeater Seals and other Seals we see while paddling.. Yes, even Leopard Seals!
