Oxfam - making a scandal where none exists

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that this current dramatic outcry against oxfam is an over exaggerated response to an event that occurred seven years ago. Currently there just seems to be a real need to find sex abuse in every corner of society. Now we have an internationally recognised charity being blamed for not providing juicy details of bad male behaviour seven years ago.

In 2011 when carrying out relief work in Haiti following the disaster there, four men hired the service of professional prostitutes. They were found out and sacked. Three members of the local managerial team were also required to resign for failing in supervisory duty. The dismissal of the people involved was notified in a press release as misconduct and inappropriate behaviour.

Note that no crime was involved, and no refugees or people who might be considered vulnerable were involved. The men who hired the prostitutes were dismissed because they were considered morally unsuitable for the work they were involved in. Their supervisors were sacked failing to take proactive action.

Now, seven years later, the charity stands to lose £35. Million in much needed funding for failure to see the future, and our current moral panic over men and their sexual behaviour.

Yes, bad sexual behaviour needs to be dealt with. But oxfam acted quickly back in 2011 to remove the people involved. It removed men who might have the potential to become sexual predators, and the removal of their supervisors signalled the expectation of proactive supervision of staff. Really, where did oxfam fail.
