Kasha Katuwe

in #outdoors6 years ago

About 45 minutes north of ALbuquerque, sits the Kasha Katuwe Tent Rocks, right outside the Cochiti Pueblo. This National Monument features surreal conical rock formations called hoodoos, which dot the mountainous landscape and range anywhere from 3 to 100 feet in height. The landscapes draw comparison to sci-fi scenes or Dr Seuss, with the fantastical spires and mushrooms, as well as the mysterious and beautiful slot canyon that winds through the rock.

Volcanic explosions around 6.8 million years ago deposited a 1,000 ft layer of ash, sand, gravel and pumice over the area. As wind and water eroded the material over the millenia, the massive formations were left behind. Although the monument sprawls over 4,000 acres, a short hike from the parking area will take you through the heart of the hoodoo forest and into the picturesque slot canyon, while an alternate route takesy ou up for a panoramic overview of the scene.

If you have a sharp eye, you may spot Apache tears scattered along the ground in the area - tiny obsidian droplets of volcanic origin. Be sure to call ahead if you are planning to go, as weather conditions can cause the tribal government to close off access. Also make sure to come early enough in the day. The rangers will usher everyone by 5, and they stop letting vehicles in at 4 PM. The uniqueness of the spot and its relative ease of access make this a popular spot in summer, so be sure to allow for waiting during busy times.

Here is a short clip I took walking through the slot canyon.

amazing post :) thanks for sharing :) Cheers :)

Very interesting! I think it is cool that you are sharing these great locations with us. They definitely make me want to visit New Mexico some day. My wife has some relatives that live in Arizona and like I said in your other post we would like to camp in this area of the country some day. I look forward to getting the chance to see them in person.

Those are interesting looking rock formations. They do look like mushrooms. Looks like a neat spot to visit.
