Clear, Quick, Concise

The biggest problem I have with most Japanese media, in general, is that it drags out for so long. Mind you, it's not like Western media is exempt from this problem. The Marvel franchise is proof of that. But this is why I love IPs like Koe no Katachi and Three Days of Happiness that get exactly what they want to say out there, and stop. I certainly didn't come into Evil God Average expecting that, but by the time I realized it was over, I really appreciated that it was so short.

Isekai In a Nutshell

I think the most important thing to get across about this novel is that it's just about everything that the isekai genre has to offer, wrapped in one ridiculously tight package. Meaning it's basically the best introduction to the genre that I could ever imagine. The main character is unfathomably overpowered, she buys a cute girl slave, she becomes the manager of a dungeon, religeous group thinks she's a heretic, etc. Dozens of typical isekai tropes are used and are surprisingly polished.

Wait, It's Over?

Basically, we follow her get used to her new world, become stronger over a short period of time, meet some funny characters, reach the narrative climax, and boom! The end. I know I said I was happy with this ending, but it was still quite a shock. Based on my previous experience with books like Moon-led Journey and Tensei Slime that have hundreds of chapters, I thought this was just the start of a long, epic journey.

Conclusion

I feel this book is meant for people that are somewhat interested in what the isekai genre is but don't want to read hundreds of chapters worth of filler content. This is like the skeletal framework of an isekai story. It lacks in nuance and depth, which may be somewhat disappointing for people that already know all the tropes. Despite that, I respect the author for telling a complete story without being scared that they won't have a job tomorrow.

Oh Wait, it Wasn't Over

haHAA, whoops. turns out that was just volume 1. I was tricked into thinking there wasn't anything left because there was no cliffhanger, and it felt like a real ending. But nope, there are 2 more volumes after this. Anyway, I still think the first volume works well as an intro to isekai.
