Having just graduated from university me, I still see learning as a very important skill. In this era where things change not in the time frame of years but months and even days, without consistent learning, our knowledge regarding a certain field of knowledge may become obsolete.

Why do we need to go to university?

It is for the knowledge as well as the network. Knowledge itself has always been emphasized by the world successful people.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

A statement by Nelson Mandela whereby I think is true its core. Without education, we will have a limited scope of vision to the world we are living in.

The next is about networking. In university, we do not just learn about knowledge, but we meet people and gain new friendship. There are a lot of successful startups out there that had benefited from knowing each other in a university like Google and Facebook. That is why MBA for the top universities are still so popular which we can know a larger circle of people, and most importantly people who are self-initiated and emphasized education.

With these two principles in mind, we can look into how OS University is able to succeed in the future.

Coursework is boring, and the exams may be not that effective anymore, so what is the gauging parameter for the future graduates?

Gamifying coursework with blockchain may be one of the ways. Coursework may be done in a hackathon way whereby there is a lot of coursework can be done in a sandbox that challenges the current world technology and way of work. It is more efficient to learn about the concepts then only going into the technical details, this will make us have greater clarity when learning.

Getting recognition and benefit from it.

This is where I experienced with Linda.com from Linkedin, whereby when I finished a course with the education platform, a recognition will be automatically added to my profile, like an achievement badge. This will make learning an interesting one and like playing the game with different levels to achieve. It is important to provide such experience to the learner as this will make the learning milestone clearer and we know where we are.

Then, from there we can know better who is an enthusiastic learner.

This is great for the industry to find talents to be employed. Besides, from the point of view of entrepreneurs, it makes finding co-founders easier too. It is a very tough process to search for the right co-founders or partners in building our business, hence with this feature available, I think OS university is a great platform in the future and to be embraced by many.

Lastly, Open Source University is not about just bringing education more accessible to people and gamifying it. It also bears a greater purpose of giving human beings the key of future resilient as to be not getting replaced by AI and robots. We are all in the midst of transformation and advancing into a better era. Even for now, with the use of bots, we are able to duplicate ourselves and to let the bots do the repetitive works. It is an eventual trend that this will continue to become a norm very soon in the near future. Thus, with the lack of knowledge about this advancement, people will be left behind and soon to become helpless in the society.

I like the idea of an Open Source University but you would have to convince employers of its benefits. If you have two graduates one with an open source degree and one witb a Harvard, Yale, Oxford or Cambridge degree then the physical universities are going to win each time. It's a shame because it's really money or connections that stops people going to these places a lot of the time not intelligence.

Indeed, it is an undeniable fact, the university itself chooses the graduates to form exclusive community. It is their form of investment. As for us, we would have to choose and see which one we can afford and go for it.
