MedicBloc - Decentralized healthcare information system

Introduction


In this publication I will present a solution for the record of medical history of the persons or patients. MediBloc, is more than a decentralized application that allows to register and share user's medical information, it is an ecosystem that allows integrating patient, doctor, data researchers and insurance companies and much more. I will present the benefits offered by this platform. In addition, we will see how the structure of the platform is composed, showing how they adapt the blockchain technology to ensure user's medical information. Finally, we will know the MediBloc SDK, the token model and the use of cases.

Problem Overview


It has happened to all of us that when we go to the doctor, we always think about what's the doctor going to tell us; will it be very bad? And generally we must tell them all our medical history from the beginning all over our life: from allergies, to recent operations. Even with the advance of modern medicine in many areas of the human body, we still continue with the inefficiency of medical history information records.
And since there is no registered medical history, the doctors are in need of requesting again the laboratory tests and medical exams to corroborate the information we tell them. And the expenses begin again in the same tests that were previously done. I am generally, like many other people I know, those who lose their medical results among the bills and receipts papers.

Those things happen here where I live and I'm sure in many other places like here, they do not have a standardized medical record keeping system.

In other countries, such as the United States, there is a HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) that establishes regulations that require the protection of medical information between medical services and institutions. Therefore, the exchange of information between hospitals and clinics is likely to be difficult. And we fall into the same problem.

Imagine if patients have diseases of cognitive disability, something like Alzheimer. Those who find it difficult to remember all tests that they have been done. And let's not forget the infants, who they should be taken regularly to the doctor. Imagine yourself each time a baby has to be taken to a different medical institution; mothers should carry all the paperwork with them for tests, vaccines, allergies, medications and who knows how many other things.

This reminds me of an episode of Seinfeld, where Elaine goes to the doctor for a rash she has on her arm and for some reason the nurse leaves her medical history in front of her and she, curious, begins to read her own medical history and the doctor enters the scene and the first thing that tells her is that she should not be looking at her own medical history. This is not a joke. This fact happens in real life too. However, there is a movement called OpenNotes in favor of allowing patients access to their medical records.

It is evident that it is necessary to have a system that registers the medical history and can be accessed from anywhere by the patients themself. And let patient allow others to read or modify their own medical history.

To these problems is also attached the fact that there are many institutions that keep medical records on paper and usually suffer not only from loss of information but also errors in the exchange of information between patients; causing risks of life to the patient.

Fortunately, Dr. Allen Wookyun Kho and Dr. Eunsol Lee, decided to take action on the matter and assembled an excellent team to create MediBloc, as an ideal solution to meet the requirements of a health care information system. It is obvious that there are other attempts in the registry of health information, however, they do not offer the security, reliability and transparency of MediBloc.

MediBloc. New Medical Information System


MediBloc is an ecosystem based on the blockchain technology, which allows users to share and record their medical history. Providing a platform that allows the user not only to have his/her medical history safe and at hand, but also allows to assign permission to medical institutions, insurance companies, doctors or other individuals to access their medical information. Giving the patients control over their own medical information. In this way MediBloc changes the current health care system to achieve the integration of the data.

MediBloc allows third-party developers to create applications to access platform information through its API and SDK.

MediBloc has its own cryptocurrency or token, MED, which will be used to perform all transactions within the ecosystem.

Vision


MediBloc started as a project of two doctors to solve current problems of healthcare information system using blockchain technology. By returning patients' scattered healthcare information from medical institutions to the patients and developing an ecosystem where healthcare information is distributed safely, we will make a world with whole new healthcare experience for all including patients, healthcare providers, and researchers.

Benefits offered by MediBloc

Maximum Security

MediBloc reduces the number of people involved with the person's medical history. In addition, all information is encrypted and is only available through the user's password. Minimizing the risk of information falling into the wrong hands (minimizing leaking).

High Reliability

MediBloc is based on blockchain technology, therefore, the information is decentralized and distributed over multiple nodes, which not only prevents the loss of information but also allows the data of your medical history not to be altered or eliminated.

High level of Transparency

Another particularity offered by blockchain technology is that all transactions of reading, writing and accessing the user's medical history are recorded; so the user can know who has accessed their information.

High Interoperability

MediBloc supports different formats to store all types of medical information, including laboratory results, images, videos, among others. It has, as mentioned above, an API and SDK, to handle all these types of formats.

High Accessibility

MediBloc allows the user to access their medical history from anywhere through the internet. This prevents medical institutions from controlling user data.

Platform Structure


The MediBloc system is made up of three layers:

MediBloc Core Layer


The Core layer is the network layer responsible for storing heavy information, that is, the medical history data (photos, images, medical results, etc.). The information is stored in a distributed manner. It is important to mention that all information is encrypted to ensure the security of it. This data network is based on IPFS (InterPlanetary File System, network designed to store and share hypermedia in a distributed file system). Personal devices (laptop, phones, etc.) will be responsible for storing this information; however, the Core layer will be responsible for backing up this information. Initially users will receive 1Gb of free space for their medical history, if necessary more space MediBloc will charge a small fee for extra space, based on MED tokens.

MediBloc will also have an option to back up all medical history information in other medias if the user wishes.

Essentially it is a support layer for the blockchain environment, since the blockchain has limited storage space.

MediBloc Service Layer


This layer is the blockchain layer information and serves as a link between the lower layer (Core Layer) and the upper layer (Application Layer). It contains the EVM, Ethereum Virtual Machine, the smart contracts, the personal information and the balance of the MED tokens. To ensure the best performance and avoid problems of space capacity limit, only the hashes of the medical history data will be saved in the blockchain.

A hash is a cryptographic function that generates a code that is responsible for compactly representing a file or data set that is usually larger than the hash that is generated; with the purpose of ensuring that not even a bit of the file, document or image to which the hash is made has been modified.




MediBloc uses Qtum as blockchain technology, since it is more scalable than Ethereum because it makes use of the PoS (Proof of Stake) consensus algorithm and also It is more ecological because it consumes less electrical energy.



MediBloc Application Layer

This layer is where the dApp of MediBloc is located, this application is developed for smartphones, web environment and other devices. It has an authentication system to validate the identity of the user. This layer allows the user to use the MediBloc platform, accessing the data of their medical history, their MED balance and other functions such as information search, automatic insurance claim, medical reports, exchange of medical data with researchers and medical institutions. This application is aimed at three types of accounts: general users, doctors and medical institutions, and data researchers.

MediBloc Account


There are three types of accounts within the MediBloc ecosystem: general users, medical staff (doctors, and medical organizations) and data researchers (medical researchers and application developers)

We must emphasize that for the registration of medical or investigative personal accounts, a proof certificate is necessary.

Users may grant access to their accounts to other users, in such a way as to allow parents or relatives or other persons to handle the medical history information, with the purpose of helping them (the elderly) or supervising them (minors).


There is a modality of the user's account, which allows the public to share certain relevant information in cases of emergency, such as blood type or allergies or other significant data. In this way, paramedics can access this information without having to request permission.

MediBloc Data Search System


MediBloc implements within the Service Layer, the data search function, which allows the user to search for information within their medical history. However, this function has another peculiarity, it will allow the user to enable the search function for other users and research institutions, thus allowing researchers to find information relevant to the investigations they carry out and request the purchase of that information. Thus, the user may exchange or sell their information or medical data.

MediBloc SDK


MediBloc offers a toolkit to developers to create applications and services that access the users' medical information. The SDK includes documentation, libraries, examples and guides.

The SDK will allow, in a simple way, to create certifications for doctors and institutions, share data, make backups, perform transactions and convert medical data to different digital formats, as well as other functions from the MediBloc ecosystem.

Token Model

MediBloc will generate MED token, under the standard QRC (own of the Qtum token which corresponds to the Ethereum ERC20 standard), this is the currency that will allow to carry out the transactions within the ecosystem of MediBloc, this can be exchanged between the members of the system; It is also the token that has a monetary value. Apart from this token, MediBloc will have the Medi Points (MP), which will be used to measure the reputation and participation of users. MPs can not be exchanged either inside or outside the platform, unlike MEDs. In no way will the MP be used to measure doctors' medical skill. However, it can serve as a reference for other users as to recommend or favor the ratings of a doctor. The MP can be converted to MED, once converted, they will automatically be destroyed.

MediBloc has a pool for internal functions of the system, which comes from the collection of 10% of the exchange and sale of medical information by users. The pool is distributed as follows:

Use Cases

Personal Health Report

MediBloc allows you to have your medical history organized and accurate. Being able to compare the results of previous tests with the current ones and keep track of their own body healthcare or other relatives' or close associates'. Keep track of the medications that have been administered, including their components, since many medications change their name depending on the manufacturer but retain the same components.

Automatic Insurance Claim

MediBloc will automate invoices for treatments with insurance companies through smart contracts. Therefore, after the user receives a treatment or a medical examination, the billing information will be transmitted to the insurers.

P2P Healthcare Data Market

MediBloc has a market section, where users (patients) can sell the data of their medical histories to companies or research organizations. These sales are made in MEDs. In this way, users will know the value of their information, which will encourage them to continue contributing to the ecosystem. In the United States, annually, the values of medical data are estimated in billions of dollars, which will ensure the growth of this market.


Artificial Intelligent

MediBloc foresees the development of applications in artificial intelligence adapted to the medical history of patients. Progress in this area is increasing every day, so it is possible the advent of AI applications that help to have better health care, using data from patients' medical records, thus providing diagnoses, prognosis or recommending treatments.

Clinical Trial

MediBloc can be used to conduct studies and research by clinics and medical institutions, collecting data from the medical records of registered patients. Selecting the patients that have the requirements that their investigations need. In the same way, users will gain from sharing their medical information.

24 hour service

MediBloc will allow users to contact their doctors, from anywhere at any time, to receive medical service.



Social Networking Service

MediBloc will provide a social network among patients suffering from the same diseases, to establish communication between them and share information about symptoms and treatments. Likewise, doctors and researchers can be integrated into their community and learn more about their patients' experiences.

Partnerships



MediBloc Partners with Hanyang University Medical Center. At the beginning of April, MediBloc signed agreements with Hanyang University Medical Center (the most prestigious medical institution in Korea), being the third association after being associated with Oracle Medical Group and Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital . The medical staff and patients will take advantage of the MediBloc platform, taking the medical history information system to the next level.



MediBloc Partners with Bestian Foundation and FineInsight. In mid-April, MediBloc signed agreements with a hospital institution for the burn treaty, Bestian Foundation, and a company responsible for recording medical records called FineInsight. With the help of these two companies, MediBloc strengthens its platform with the use cases of both companies, in this way it can provide better medical attention focused on patients.



MediBloc Partners with Deloitte. At the beginning of May, MediBloc signed an agreement with Deloitte Anjin LLC. Undoubtedly, the collaboration of leading companies in blockchain technologies is necessary. For this reason, both representatives declared:

that they would explore and collaborate jointly on blockchain business opportunities, and actively communicate about the market and global technology trends.

It is clear that partnerships with large companies will form the basis and will be the support that MediBloc will have to compete in the market of blockchain technologies.

MediBloc represents a breakthrough for the care of human health. For the first time, patients will have control over their medical history. Reducing medical errors due to lack of knowledge of the patient's complete history. Patients can not only access their information, they can also keep track of their health, by comparing the results of all tests over time, treatments and medications administered. Medibloc will give users the opportunity to sell their medical data to institutions and researchers. Allowing in this way that researchers have access to a wide variety of data on diseases and effects of treatments. The benefits of this platform make it the best solution to improve patient-focused medical care.
