About 300 b.c the Greeks knew that particles of wheat were attracted to amber necklaces. They called this effect 'electricity ' after the word 'electron' which meant amber. Subsequently, many substances were found to possess the ability to attract light particles once they had been rubbed, and the particles were then said to be electrified or charged, or to have a charge. Today you can see easily see this power of attraction if you rub aplastic biro or pen holder , or a rubber ballon, vigorously on the sleeve of your jacket, and bring it near to small pieces of paper .
