Origami means in Japanese oru: to fold and kami: paper, it is the art of folding the paper to give it a form of animal, flower or all that one wants, finally what one can realize. It's not easy to get started, but once you've had a taste, it's hard to stop. In addition, it allows to decorate his home in a very original way and at a lower cost. The art of origami also offers an original and unique handmade gift.

Folding origami paper is a Japanese tradition that dates back to the 6th century. At first, these folds were used to package drugs or some small, delicate purchases. It was also used by monks during religious rituals.

Origami was then used for ceremonies such as weddings, where sake flasks are surrounded by folded butterfly paper.
In Japan, the art of paper folding has spread into everyday life, indeed, it is taught to children in school since the early 19th century.

In Belgium, for example, the art of folding is not widespread, but children are still used to school boats, planes and casseroles.

The art of origami is now widespread in many countries, there are even salons and conventions that are organized. There is also a lot of literature that has been published on this subject with directories of all possible folds and origami language.

Origami families

There are several types of origami that are classified by family. Here are the four main types below:

Traditional origami

The models are made from a single sheet of paper, without cutting or gluing. They are usually animals (crane, frog, crab) but they can also represent plants, characters, vehicles or buildings.

Modular origami

Several copies of the same basic folding are assembled to obtain a geometric shape.

Origami in motion

The realizations can move by pressing on it with a finger or by pulling on one of the pieces of paper like for example a fluttering bird.

I have a friend who makes origami garlands and individual pieces that she currently sells at Christmas markets, it takes a lot of time but the result is beautiful. I ordered a garland and I took two models of birds for my children, it's super beautiful in the house is an original decoration, light and colorful. I think I'll get started, especially since my children also want to try so this is the opportunity.
