Eagle Creek Fire Update: Some Dumbass Kid Started it With Fireworks
As if this story couldn't get any worse, eye witness Liz Fitzgerald reported that when she saw a group of teenage boys lighting fireworks and throwing them down a hill on the Eagle Creek trail, they were unrepentant, laughing at her consternation.
She asked if they realized they'd just started a forest fire. One replied "What are we supposed to do about it now?" How about not starting it in the first place, you little shit? The 15 year old who Liz Fitzgerald identified as the main culprit is now in police custody.
Predictably this has enraged Oregonians. Many are out for blood. Oregon law makes parents liable for only $7,500 worth of damages caused by their children, which most are saying is unacceptably low in this case. It's uncertain what the extent of the punishment will be.
Multnomah Falls, perhaps the most famous local landmark, has been devastated:
Oneonta tunnel, another notable local landmark fondly remembered by many who have passed through it, has also been destroyed. As the supports were wooden, odds are good it will collapse soon and even if not, it's unsafe to utilize or to attempt to reinforce at the moment:
Some are instead calling for mercy and understanding. After all, who among us never did anything stupid when we were kids? However in my opinion, whether the suspect receives mercy should depend on whether anybody dies as a result of this fire. So far no casualties have been reported.
The last fire on this scale was the Yacolt Burn in 1902, which killed a total of 65 Oregonians. It was started by some kids trying to burn a hornet's nest. It's funny, morbidly in this case, how history seems to repeat itself.
There's also been growing recognition that the increasingly hot, dry conditions brought about by gradual warming of the atmosphere and ocean is giving way to an "era of mega-fires", exacerbated by past decisions to squash every little fire the moment it started rather than allowing strategic burns to clear out combustible materials, limiting how large an uncontrolled fire could become.
If any good comes of this tragedy, it will be to raise awareness of, and public support for, experimental controlled burns that forestry experts have been advocating for decades. Such risky measures may prove necessary to manage the much worse risk of Eagle Creek style mega fires going forward.
I have a place in Troudale and one in Fairview. I been doin my best to help out and we just cant get anything under control. They grounded the plane that was supposed to come help extinguish it. Its horrible
I heard about that! Some bullshit about red tape. What's the good of such assets if they can't even be used when they're needed the most?
I was hearing this
thanks for your help @pitbull808!!!
@alexbeyman,
OMG that's hurt! WTF is happening to those kids! Specially 15-18 years teenagers are look like terrorists! Actually, I have very unpleasant image about them. Look what those bastards did :/
Few days ago I was at a highway to my home and I saw same age 15-18 set of teenagers are throwing rocks (small piece of stones) to vehicles which drive on highway! If that stone hit on the windscreen I won't tell you the outcome! They are not anymore kids, they can think, they have a brain inside of that f_cking skull (I think)! They can think about the outcome of their action!
Look what those small bastards did to the state! Look how much of people have suffered by that huge forest fire! That's why I said those are not kids anymore, those are terrorists!
Actually I don't know WTH has happened to them. But I can say those are crimes and we should not let it go by saying, those are just kids!
Cheers~
@theguruasia, I have to say that I agree with some of what you say. It doesn't matter how well kids are brought up, some teens just are testy to see what they can get away with. After a certain age, most teens know full well, exactly what they are doing, and should know what the outcome will be. Parents can only do so much controlling. Maybe the parent/parents were at work, or they were told the teens were going to their friends. I don't understand why people think the parents should have to pay for their child's wrong doing after a certain age. Put the kid in community service to pay it off and/or spend a month in jail. Kids make mistakes, but that fire was no mistake. Even great parents have their kids turn south when it comes to lack of respect.
@pixiehunter,
Yeah my dear friend! I think less concern and less controlling of kids make those situations! And yeah parents won't pay for this! Coz 15 years old means they are no more kids. They have a brain inside of that skull and it can think, think about the action and the reaction! Hope this might be a good example for every parent and teenagers as well!
Respect your way of thinking!
Cheers~
I hope they were some sweet ass fireworks considering his life could be ruined over this. I dunno how kids are so fucking stupid sometimes. I never would have considered doing shit like that when I was 15. Christ.
I read it was a smoke bomb..... a friggin smoke bomb.
So...It was the greatest of all fireworks. My hats off to him then, he sure did this with style. Only way he could have done it better would have been by using a black snake firework.
HA!
I used to live in Kansas... I loved fireworks.
Now I'm a Coloradan, and I want nothing to do with them.
It's a serious threat here in the high desert, especially with all the people who just come in the summer, unaware of the dangers of wildfire.
We've been really lucky so far this year. Praying for rain on the fires.
The kids parents should be punished, not the kids themselves.
They did what they did because they did not receive a good education from their parents.
If you have a son is your duty to teach him what is good and what is bad, what he should do and what he should not do.
In Italy also a lot of forests have been devastated by the flames because people set them on fire. Those actions should be punished with prison in my opinion.
Horrible. Hope no one gets hurt. Bastards.
This is a big mistake by kids
holy crap!
amigo #resteemia at your service
'everything has changed. so kids too. look how they made mistakes, at the same age level what we did & what they do'. those kids seem stupid or psycho & made a biggest mistake. ruined their lives & ruined millions of peoples' lives at the same time. nice article @alexbeyman
