This could be the soundtrack to an old ghost story from the Karoo...

It begins with a prospector fleeing a small mining town with a large diamond. He hopes to reach the Cape and catch a ship to a place beyond the Empire. After days without sustenance he chooses to rob a young San hunter of his game, accidentally killing the young man in the struggle...

The prospector was found, 17 years later, hanging from a tree in (what was then-called) Somaliland, still in the same clothes he fled in. He was no more than a week dead when found, and according to some teller's of the tale, the young boy that found the prospector discovered, in his mouth, that very same diamond that had driven him out in the first place.
