Steemit Open Mic 142: Funga

Steemit Open Mic 142
I met with some drumming friends the other night and they agreed we should drum a rhythm and see if there is a place on #openmic for what we do. This rhythm is called Funga and is known to be a welcoming rhythm. It was originally brought to USA in the fifties when Babatunde Olantunji arrived from Nigeria on a scholarship to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He brought the African drums to America. I'm not going to say much about him now because his story deserves a special post if not several.

I do agree it is a welcoming and relaxing Rythm I look forward to learning more about it

Thank you. I hope to get that post up soon.

Looking forward to seeing it

There is just something about hearing drums like that that puts a smile on my face. Thank you.

I know what you mean. It hits me that way too. I'm glad you like it.

It's awesome to see drums on OpenMic. You guys are great!

Thank you, I appreciate that coming from you!

Sounds good. How do you keep the neighbors from calling the cops? Also, did he hit the extra note at the end as a joke?

Oh yes the neighbors, I have taught most of my neighbors to play and they like it. Several of our neighbors will come out to pull their weeds when I practice or come over and join me. I don't think anyone has ever called on on anyone. I'll have to ask them.
The last hit at the end (lands on the "one") is done quite a bit by most drummers lately. In the beginning of my learning African it was never done by an African...they didn't know where or what the "one" was, to them they are just reproducing words on the drum face. I haven't drummed in years and doing this last hit at the end of a rhythm has become the norm while I've been away. I've asked my players not to do it but have given up that request because it's kind of silly when then have become so accustomed to doing it and in the presentation of the rhythm it not that important but they are still trying to follow my old request.
We met this night not to do an "openmic" post it was kind of a last minute request and I didn't want them to have to do it again. There were several places in the piece that could have been done better but I didn't want to ask them to do it again.

Nice rhythm music and co operation is necessary for this groups.

You're right, cooperation is necessary. Thank you for listening. I'm glad you liked it kamrunnahar.

Very nice drum music!! Everyone synchronized with each other very well! I could never do that! Funga is very soft and warm!

Don't say never, because I thought the same thing at one time. Thank you, I'm glad you like it.

I feel like I want to dance with the beat...... with my head LOL :D willowwisp

Thank you, that's the ultimate compliment. How ever you enjoy the music is all good.

That was really wonderful. Such a fabulous beat kept. I wish I could do that.

Thank you Pryde. I'm going to show in later post how to do it and how to play in a drum circle.

Very nice rhythm, I liked!

Thank you almi.

It sounds relaxing and as I can see everyone enjoys doing it. Well, in a group, everything is more fun. Good vibes for everyone!

Thank you Ester. One thing about drumming it takes at least two to make it interesting and like you said..."in a group everything is more fun." I'm glad you liked it.
